Died December 25, 2013 at the Loudoun Hospital Cornwall campus in Leesburg of complications from melanoma. Cockburn, of Unison, VA, was born at Glebe Farm, Shuckburgh, England on May 18, 1956 to Anne Blaker and the late Edmund Crosby Cockburn. A natural horseman, Cockburn was a championship steeplechase jockey and trainer and former huntsman of the Goshen Hounds, the Loudoun Hunt and Master-Huntsman of the Loudoun Hunt West. He won many awards during his racing career and in 1998 suffered a fall that left him a quadriplegic, however he continued to pursue his love of horses until his death. In addition to his mother Anne, of Warwickshire, England, survivors include a daughter Katie of Long Beach, MS, and a son, Sam of Starkville, MS. His marriage to Chrissy Keys Heard ended in divorce. Also surviving are a brother Kim, of Warwickshire, a sister, Georgina Neil of Hay, Australia, a niece and two nephews. A celebration of Cockburn's life will be held Friday, January 10, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Buchanan Hall, Upperville, VA.
