JOHN THOMAS SAPIENZA  
A retired partner with the Covington & Burling law firm in Washington, DC, died peacefully at home in Silver Spring, MD, at the age of 101 on March 12, 2014. John served as a staff attorney to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1943-46) and left with the rank of Lt. Commander. John served on the Board of Directors for Hiram Walker, Wyman Gordon, and American Security Bank, and was a Trustee of the George Washington University. John is survived by his two sons from his first marriage to Phyllis E. Kershaw, John T. (Peggy Rae) Sapienza Jr. of Silver Spring, MD, and James K. (Diane) Sapienza of Charlotte, NC, and also by his stepsons Frederick E. (Struthers) Gignoux of Charlottesville, VA, and Phillip M. (Mary Alice Kleinjan) Gignoux of Washington, DC, and all their children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his second wife Virginia H. Gignoux and by his stepson Peter A. Gignoux of Provence, France. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on June 7, 2014, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James C. Sapienza Memorial Book Fund at the George Washington University Law Library, 2000 H Street NW, Washington, DC 20052.
