GERTRUDE KORNFELD Obituary

GERTRUDE H. KORNFELD, PhD
Of Alexandria, Virginia died on December 5, 2014 unexpectedly. Born in Vienna, Austria, on December 4, 1922, she fled with her family to Palestine to escape Nazi persecution in 1938. In 1952 she boarded a ship to the US to study art. Her interest in animation of scientific films and her unusual aptitude for mathematics led her to study physics. With a PhD in physics, she worked in a Night Vision and Electro-Optics Laboratory for the U.S. Army for 26 yrs. Her Visual Arts education combined with Physics earned her a special qualification at U.S. citizenship. She was a high achiever in all her endeavors, one of them being tennis. Gertrude never married and had no children. Many a year ago, she chose the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church as her faith community, where she found emotional and intellectual kinship, as well as close friends. She moved to Paul Spring Retirement Community on Ft. Hunt Rd in Alexandria, VA, where she lived for 15 years. It was a choice she never regretted. A Celebration of her Life at MVUC will be announced at a later date.  Donations in her memory can be made to the Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, VA 22307.

I remember Gertrude from working at Night Vision in the 1990s. If you did the smallest favor for her, she'd appreciate it greatly and consider you a friend.

Gertrude was my parents neighbor at Paul Springs and enjoyed my Dad playing his clarinet for her. It gave joy to both my Dad and Gertrude. She will be missed.
