I just found out Dr Shaffer passing as I browse tru Orthopedic Drs in the Metro Dc. I left washington in late 2015 after I retired and now back to DC again. He did my arthroscopic surgery in the early 90s. He´s very knowledgeable, precise and a good man. His medical report opened the door for me to get in to my disability claim and later was awarded monetary compensation.
Rest in eternal peace Dr Shaffer

You were almost always running late, at when you were seeing me...and we had these stupid exchanges...me telling you that I had waited that long only for pretty women..and you with some comebacks seemingly funny (only to you).... I miss you man...even your silly jokes....

Hello Dr. Shaffer,
I still tell folks how awesome a guy you are & how there's just no one better at fixing the human body from years of physical pounding, contact sports & Life. When you left us, it changed my entire view of the metro DC region. Hard to put into words, but things just became less fun, less big city small town local vibe good stuff, less everything in an intangible yet impactful way. You're still missed, a lot, and your loss is still heavy upon a lot of hearts.
All the best.

Ben, my right knee feels great and my left ulnar nerve has not bothered me, since you operated on them. Both my shoulders are holding steady despite my 66 years, even the left one with the sensitive, ultra inflamed biceps tendon. Every part of mine you took care off...and boy, we saw a lot of each other for such a long time... has improved to the point that they no longer need any particular care. Thank you, for one more time. You left us, too early... You still make me smile when I remember your jokes.. RIP Dr. Shaffer.

I also just learned of the loss of Dr. Shaffer while I was searching for his new location to obtain not only the best in medical care but someone who actually cared, in the personal sense. I am thankful for having experienced such an exceptional level of attention and pray that the benefits from good he as sewn on earth will be abundantly reaped by his family and loved ones.

My family and I, especially our son, Ethan, owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Shaffer. He gave our son back his life. After 6 years of misdiagnoses, we were sent to Dr. Shaffer by a colleague in New York City. Dr. Shaffer immediately and correctly diagnosed the problem, confirmed his diagnosis with some PT, and then operated to fix our son's knee. He was only 24 and, with that surgery, got his life back.
We were so sorry to learn of Dr. Shaffer's passing and will never forget our debt to him. We wish his wife, children, family, friends and colleagues peace through time and memories, and we wish Dr. Shaffer everlasting peace in heaven.

It is unfair for such a wonderful man and great doctor to depart so early. I was a powerlifter for most of my life. Ben operated on me twice (knee, elbow) with excellent results. Advised me about almost every body part for the more than 10 years I was his patient and refferred me to other doctors for things outside of his specialty. He was excuding knowledge, compassion, positive energy. It was very hard to believe that this bright, youthful, full of energy man, was gone.
Thanks, again, for everything Dr. Shaffer.
My condolences to your family.

I am so deeply saddened having learned of this loss to the family and friends of Dr. Shaffer. He performed a very successful rotator cuff surgery on me in 2010 and I had been living in New York City since, until returning to DC one year ago. I have shamelessly boasted over the years about my contact with Dr. Shaffer, the success of my surgery and the aftermath. A great Dr. with a gentle touch and a pleasant personality. He is indeed missed by many.

Likewise, I too just learned of Ben's passing, (officially0 though I had heard a rumor a year or so ago but presumed it was a different person. Ben treated me a couple times across my 61 trips around the sun and always blessed me with solid advice and always focused on PT vs surgery. He was clearly in command of his field but also had the ability to make things fun and humorous too. I recommended him anytime someone asked me. As a fellow husband and father I can feel the pain of this enormous loss of such an awesome man. Please know, I write for you all surviving Ben's passing and you all live now in my prayers and thoughts now and anytime I think of Ben and his great smile. God bless you all. Mark

My deepest condolences to Dr. Shaffer's family, friends, colleagues, and patients. I first met him about six years ago for a torn rotator cuff, and I regard him as one of the finest doctors I have ever known in my 75 years. He had exceptional medical knowledge and skill, as well as outstanding personal qualities. I just learned this morning of Dr. Shaffer's untimely death because I was thinking of consulting him about a new orthopedic problem - even though I now live many miles from the DC area. What a tremendous loss for all who knew him. - Bob J., Port Chester, NY

Dear Family of Dr. Shaffer,
I am stunned to hear of his passing, so young.
He saved my life after I had been misdiagnosed by others for a year, and he promptly ordered the test that would reveal Stage 3B lung cancer. He also arranged for me to have the best surgeon possible, Dr. Mark Soberman. I'm now a very lucky 10-year survivor (and counting).
About 5 years ago, I went to his practice with a broken arm after a fall from a horse. I was to see someone else, but Dr. S saw my name and came in to see me. I waved my arm and joked, "I'm pretty sure this isn't cancer!" He was so delighted and gave me a big hug.
What a wonderful doctor and human being. I am so sorry for your loss. Like his legions of grateful patients, I'll always remember him.
Sincerely,

Dear Jill,
You and I met many years ago when you and Ben were dating. I was a Capitol Hill guy and he reconstructed my knee at G-town and afterward remained friendly. I remember us sharing stories of the "social Safeway" and him telling me he was "out of your league." I always knew you guys would end up together!
I lost touch with Ben after I moved to Philadelphia in the late 90s but reconnected a few years ago by email. I just recently came across this horrible news and wanted you to know that you are yours are in our thoughts and prayers.
Warmly,

Dear Mrs. Shaffer,
I'm deeply saddened when I found out that Dr Ben passed away. I was looking for some information about him because I was planning to see him sometimes in August 2016. I met Dr Ben in 2007 and he did an extraordinarily surgery for my right knee. I met him again in 2012 to make sure that everything is fine. He was so kind and a good listener.
My prayers and supplications go to you and his son and daughter.
Best regards.

Ben and I worked together at Georgetown University in the 90s. When I found out several months ago that he had passed I was devastated. My images of Ben was always one of someone who would live forever. I will never forget how kind he was to me when my father passed as well as how through the years Ben and my life would circle around: an interfaith support group at a local synagogue, a random hockey game or just happenchance in the Georgetown area. Ben who could be so intimidating with his tallness and strength was underneath such a gentle soul and mensch of the mensches. Hoping that his friends and family are doing well during this continuous time period. Thanks to Hospice for having a support group to help process and understand Ben and suicide better. Feel free to write me if you have anything memories or insight about Ben. Still to this day I am trying to understand the Ben Shaffer I knew back in the 90s. Nice guy and condolences to close friends and family.

I am so saddened to have just learned that Dr. Shaffer has passed away. I met Dr. Shaffer a little over 11years years ago at Rosenthal LanRover, which he and I stood in the parking lot and talked Range Rovers pros and cons for about a good 45min. Not knowing he was a doctor, we just talked. He never came off as being arragaunt nor pretentious, as a matter of fact, I was schooling him about Range Rovers. I will never forget my initial encounter as I was explaining my experiences with Range Rover, he had a look on his face indicating excitement as well as "you will never have to explain this to me again". Very brilliant man and kind human being. He was truly one of kind. My family's heart and prayers goes out to his family and all of his collegeus and friends.

I just heard today a year and weeks later that Dr Shaffer has passed. I was speechless. My internist Paul Silver referred me to Dr Shaffer in 2010 when I broke my ankle thanks to "snowmaggedon!" We started off shaky but I came to really like him and trust him without reservation. He went on to perform surgery on both rotator cuffs and I used to joke with him that he had rebuilt me like the "bionic woman" and with all the procedures he had performed on me I had to have least paid for one semester of one of his children. My heartfelt and deepest sympathy to your family, he was an exceptional surgeon and once I understood his ALPHA personality a man I truly enjoyed and respected. RIP in peace Dr Shaffer!!!

What a supreme human being he was. He repaired our daughter's torn ACL in college as a freshman and she became an All American by senior year. He was a doctor and man for others. Just learned today of his departure from our lives. I know he is in a special place with all he has helped.
A tragic loss.

I was recommended to Dr Shaffer for two torn rotator cuffs and bicep due to weight lifting. He performed the surgery and was the best. Words cannot communicate my sadness and loss. My deepest sympathy to his family , his patients and all that knew him.

I was a patient under Ben just a year before his passing. I tore my PCL and he helped me repair the damage to the extent that I was rehabilitated just 8 months after and now have two fully (and equally) functional knees. An exceptional and hard-working doctor and admirable man, he will be missed
March 3, 2016
What a shock to learn of Dr Shaffer's death. He saved me from an unnecessary rotator cuff surgery, for which I am eternally grateful. He was one of a kind in the medical profession. The old cliche about the good dying young is absolutely true in this case.

I echo similar sentiments as other patients have said; Dr Shaffer was the best doctor that I have ever had in my life time. I first meet him in 1993 at Georgetown for ACL reconstruction surgery and then again for 2 more knee surgeries in later years. As others struggle with PT and getting full length extension, I was able to get there in two weeks and knew that it was attributed to having an exceptional doctor and being lucky to find him. I had often referred to Ben as my beacon of hope. If I knew one thing by going to him my issues with my knees were going to be resolved and stronger than before. Having this absolute confidence in a surgeon gave me the assurance that regardless of my struggles this was one had a positive resolution. It served as my hope to continue to move forward on a better path. I was blessed to be his patient and saddened for his loss. I had stumbled across this sad news giving him as a referral. My deepest condolences to his family. May you forever find peace in knowing how lucky you are to receive his love. I can only imagine it was with the similar great care and passion that he gave to his patients.

Dr. Shaffer was a great doctor. He helped me with my injured knee 17 years ago. Under his care, I was able to finish the police academy without any problems and haven't experienced any further knee problems. I have recommended him to many. I recently had a shoulder injury and was advised to see an orthopedic doctor. I immediately looked up Dr. Shaffer and just learned about his passing. He was the best. My condolences go out to his family.

Ben - fixed my elbow. He was recommended by a Dr when I was in Hawaii scuba diving. I looked Ben up and instantly booked the surgery .. I was grateful when he said " I fixed it" no therapy needed -- unlike the other surgeons.
January 6, 2016
I was just about to recommend Dr. Shaffer to a friend based on the wonderful work he did in repairing my rotator cuff muscle that was torn off the bone. I went to Dr. Shaffer after a referral and a bad experience with another orthopedic surgeon who was trying to rush me into surgery and who had painted a dismal and alarmist picture of my horrible life without surgical intervention (and then noted the pain in recovery if I had surgery). Dr. Shaffer had a marvelous bedside manner, letting me know there were options and what the limitations would be in functionality if I elected not to have the surgery. He calmed my fears, and I had the surgery with minimal discomfort and I couldn't have been more grateful to him. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him. What a wonderful person. I am truly saddened and shocked by the news of his passing. My prayers and condolences to the family. D. Herndon

I was just about to recommend Dr. Shaffer to a friend of mine who had injured her knee and went on line to get his contact information only to learn this sad news. Dr Schaffer was my hero when it came to orthopedics. I tore my right ACL in 2002 while skiing and he repaired my knee to where I can honestly say it was stronger than before the accident. When I tore my left ACL while skiing in 2010, there was no question who would help me. Dr. Shaffer was, without a doubt, the best doctor I have known. His positive attitude, amazing skills and brilliance will be sorely missed. I cannot tell you how saddened I am to know that he is no longer with us. A real loss for humanity and for the medical profession. My deepest sympathies for his family. God bless you Ben Shaffer - you made a lot of our lives better with your medical skills.

I cannot state this emphatically enough: Dr. Shaffer changed my life. When I first met him, I'd had debilitating pain in both my legs for over a year. Unlike many of the other doctors who just wanted me to figure out some way to "deal with it", Dr. Shaffer insisted that a man of my age (I was 23 at the time) shouldn't have to live the rest of his life in agony. Dr. Shaffer applied himself thoroughly, leaving no stone un-turned in his attempt to get me the relief I needed. Eventually, as a result of his efforts, my condition was properly diagnosed. I had surgery on my left leg this past February and my right leg this past April. Though Dr. Shaffer himself did not perform the operation, it never would have happened if not for him or a physician of his caliber.
The depths of my despair prior to treatment were complete. I'd been a three season varsity cross country and track runner in high school and college for years but was staring down the barrel of spending the rest of my life without running. I couldn't walk, sleep, or go up and down the stairs without pain. I was a wreck of my former self. Dr. Shaffer helped bring me back again. It is difficult to describe my gratitude to him without resorting to superlatives.
To the family of Dr. Shaffer: Ben was a fine man who helped so many people. Though he is gone, please, take comfort from the fact that there are so many of us who have such better lives because he was a part of our healing. I know I'm one of them. God bless you, Ben Shaffer!

I injured my my knee recently and was about to reach out to Dr. Shaffer when I learned that he passed away. How sad to lose such a gifted surgeon! Dr. Shaffer operated on both of my shoulders (rotator cuff surgery) and I am so grateful to have been one of his patients. I loved his humor, positive outlook and encouragement that I was going to sail through a very painful experience. I send heartfelt condolences to his family.

I was so saddened to hear of Dr Shaffer's passing. I was referred to him by a doctor in Cumberland, MD back in 2000 because I needed a more "special specialist" to treat my unique knee injury. He was indeed that, and more! He was kind, a little bit funny, and took his job very seriously. After the surgery, he told my husband "don't worry, I fixed it, she won't have any more problems." I appreciated his confidence. I looked him up this week due to a nagging hip injury, knowing his expertise would get me quick answers and the best advice on treatment. I can picture him looking over his glasses at me. He will be missed.

What a loss!
I interviewed with Dr. Shaffer for my "dream job" a couple years ago. After my third round interview, I didn't get it and I was somewhat bitter for the next year.
Looking back now, it wasn't that being a surgeons assistant was ever my "dream job" but rather the excitement over being able to work for someone like Dr. Shaffer. I was in awe of him and his passion for his patients and his craft.
I'm so sorry for the pain his family, colleagues and friends must be feeling now but I know that he has inspired many future physicians who will fulfill his legacy.
Dr. Shaffer, it was a pleasure.

Like others who wrote on this sight, I, too, was shocked and saddened to learn that Dr. Shaffer died. After being treated by him a couple of years ago, I was pleased that to know that I had a competent, caring doctor to return to when I next needed to see an orthopedist. He went out of his way to ensure that I got the treatment I needed and was responsive to all of my questions ( and I always have a lot.) I am so sad! Joanne

I just learned of Dr. Shaffer's passing and I am deeply saddened. I saw him twice for a shoulder injury- in December 2014 and February 2015. I have never had such a compassionate doctor. My first appointment was delayed 2 hours as he had been held up in surgery. As I was the last patient of the day, on a Friday, I was afraid I would be rushed through the appointment. Not so. He was patient, listened and was concerned about the pain I was experiencing and the level of my injury. I never had a doctor be so kind and caring. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family.

I just learned of Dr Shaffer's passing this AM. Like everyone else, I'm shocked and saddened. He was the most charismatic man I have ever encountered. He had amazing bed side manner to match his skill and went above and beyond. He repaired 3 out of 4 labrums on my body, and he had such compassion when I had to have 2 repairs within a 6 month span. I had a complication with my hip surgery due to an old injury, and he worked his network of colleagues to get the problem diagnosed and rectified immediately. I was hoping to never have to visit him again for the 4th labrum, but I was hoping to see him soon just because he was such an amazing man. He truly touched my life, which is not easy to do, and I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends.

My Heart is extremely heavy. I just learned of your passing and the void that I am feeling is so great. I find comfort in knowing that you are now, one of our guardian angels and that you are caring for all us in a different way. It is rare to encounter a Doctor, Man or Person of your character and compassion. So for that reason, I am truly grateful to have been one of your patients. So sad to hear of Dr Shaffer's passing. I saw him 12 years ago after many physicians failed to diagnose my hip issues. Despite being a well known orthopedic surgeon along with all his accomplishments he was completely humble and admitted he did not know what was wrong and suggested exploratory arthroscopy. With that he discovered and repaired the issue and changed my life. Again, even with all that he humbly admitted what I had was rare and he was unsure he repaired it satisfactorily. He referred me to Dr Byrd in Nashville, TN to double check his work!!! Dr Byrd assured Dr Shaffer and I that the repair was excellent. It truly changed my life and I was back to living. I have thought of him often and have recently been having some pain and was thinking of seeing him. So sad to know such a talented, humble physician and a wonderful person has left us. RIP Dr Shaffer. You will truly be missed.

We just learned of Dr. Shaffer's passing and there aren't words to describe the sad, sick feeling of losing such a fine doctor who had a personality to match his exceptional skills.
Six years ago my daughter experienced a hip injury playing basketball. It was a debilitating injury and it was assumed that she had likely torn the labrum. We were referred to Dr. Shaffer by another doctor in his practice. Dr. Shaffer could have performed a painful, expensive test to determine the exact problem, but instead said he didn't need to put my daughter through that because he was certain it was either a torn ligament or torn labrum and he could determine that when he was in her hip. He thought he would find a torn ligament and he was right. His feel for diagnosing the problem and putting patients at ease demonstrated that he had found his calling. My daughter was a nervous wreck about everything the morning of the surgery, including getting the IV beforehand, but Dr. Shaffer had a way of comforting her in ways my husband and I couldn't, maybe it was his humor that eased the anxiety. I think she, like so many have expressed here, felt that she could trust his ability and his commitment to her well-being. When we told her about Dr. Shaffer's passing, she was completely devastated because she said that Dr. Shaffer "fixed her and gave her her life back."
May you truly rest in peace. You did so much for so many and we are at a loss for words as to how much this news has impacted our family.
I hope that the remembrances expressed give comfort to his entire family...he was truly exceptional.

A hockey pal of mine told me of Dr. Shaffer's passing last night. I've known him for nearly 20 years. He was always cheerful and generous. As a doctor, he could see what others couldn't. When I went to see him to get a second opinion on lack of healing for two torn ligaments in my knee, I was so afraid I would have to get surgery or lose the use of my knee. Instead, it turned out that the heavy brace that had been prescribed to me was weakening not strengthening my leg! You have joined the stars, good doctor, and your good light will always shine. A'o!

I just learned about Dr. Shaffer's passing today. I am in shock. I just saw him in April at the K St. office. He was always in such a positive frame of mind. I will miss him. My prayers to his family.

Recommended a friend to Dr Shaffer and was blown away when he called me back and said he had passed. I had just seen him the week before he passed and we talked about our birthday because we shared the same day April 22. Was truly sorry to hear this today. He was the best Doctor I had ever dealt with and really made you feel like a friend.

Dr. Ben Shaffer was a phenomenal person. He fixed my torn rotator cuff after two failed surgeries by other doctors. His personality was incredible because he took a very stressful situation and flourished. Always there to pick you up if you were feeling down, extremely approachable. I thoroughly enjoyed paying the parking on K St because he was just THAT good. I will miss you terribly.... Rest in peace Dr. Shaffer.

Went down today to K Street and hoping to make an appointment to see Dr. Shaffer and was told he has died.
The man took care of me since 2003. Repaired a torn ACL on my left knee and in 2010 repaired a torn left shoulder. Never felt closer to a doctor in my life than Ben Shaffer. He was kind and an all pro and made me to believe all would be well in the end and it has been. Learning of his death today just sucks and reading all of the wonderful comments on here shows how beloved he was by so many. If his family ever wondered how many people outside loved him spend some time reading on here. You man was awesome and and beyond.

A tremendous loss to the Washington community. Ben was a consummate surgeon and healer. He is the reason I still play tennis when I am 70 YO. He fixed up my shoulder so well that I have unrestricted use to it. He repaired three of the major tendons making up the "rotator cuff".

I'm heartbroken to hear of Dr. Shaffer's passing. He repaired my broken knees three times (two ACLs and a microfracture) and I got back to doing triathlons afterwards. He was both a tremendously skilled surgeon and a physician who cared deeply for his patients. He will be tremendously missed by so many. Thank you for everything Dr. Shaffer.

Sorry to hear about Dr Shaffer. He was so willing to take care of me and my shoulder problem, though I was at long distance from Washington (in India). He helped make the arrangements for me to come for surgery, and afterwards monitored my recovery and physical therapy. I was very fortunate to have such wonderful doctor care for me. Condolences to his family and friends

I, like so many of Dr. Shaffer's patients, am devastated at the news of his death. I called WOSM yesterday to double check on the time of my upcoming appointment with him and was hit with the ton-of-bricks news. All I could say was, "What? Oh, my God! WHAT?"
Dr. Shaffer repaired a tear in my rotator cuff in January. I was his patient for only 6 months. I think what impressed me most, besides his skill as a surgeon, was the attention to his patients. He promised to call me prior to my surgery to answer additonal questions my husband and I had. It was 8:30 pm when he called. Even after a long day, he gave the impression he had all the time in the world to answer our questions so that we fully understood. He was so full of life and energy. I think that is why this is so hard to comprehend.

For three years prior to seeing Dr. Shaffer, I had virtually no quality of life following a hockey knee injury - two surgeries and no improvement. I walked into WOSM and immediately felt at ease. His bedside manner was wonderful - he was caring and comforting. He performed the surgery about six months later and returned me my life. For that I was and always will be grateful. I am heartbroken at the loss of such a wonderful surgeon and healer. RIP Dr. Shaffer

How many doctors do you know who give their patients their personal cell phone number and email address, and tell them to contact him any time they have a question (and really mean it!). I've only met ONE, and that was Ben Shaffer. Our email exchanges over the years not only addressed my medical issues, but also branched out to politics and health care. His responses were always within days (if not hours) of my messages. His professional abilities were unmatched, but even more importantly, his true caring for his patients, sense of humor, and bedside manner were like nothing I'd ever witnesses. I learned of his passing only today, and it felt like someone hit me with a wet towel. I can imagine the pain his family has been experiencing. My heart and my prayers go out to you. I will never forget you, Ben. You were truly one-of-a-kind and a healer of both body and spirit.

Dear Shaffer Family,
Like so many people posting here I received extremely personal, thoughtful and professional care from Ben. I came to him with a full hamstring avulsion; in fact he was the one who properly diagnosed it as such after another doc had said it was a tear that would heal on its own. He sent me for an MRI, advised me that surgery was my return ticket to athletic activity and then, sensing my dread and aversion to surgery, told me to go see Jim Bradley in Pittsburgh for an ultimate decision on operating.
"I've done 20 of these and they all worked out well, but I don't need to do a 21st," Ben told me. "Bradley is the real expert with hamstrings; he'll take care of you."
He said this despite all of his earned expertise and accolades in repairing hamstrings. It was such an uncommon deference to see in a man in our society, in his profession and in this city.
Ben also helped my mother with various sports injuries and, in all of our family's visits to him, he was unfailingly professional, human and focused on the patient in front of him. Further, after my eventual surgery in Pittsburgh, Ben saw me for follow-up and treated me as one of his patients, and even returned my neurotic calls for reassurance and advice when I was certain I had ruined the surgical repair.
At one point I apologized for descending into despair over the roller-coaster recovery and he said, "Look, this was major surgery. It's a big deal and it's normal to feel what you're feeling. You're going to be OK but call any time you want to talk or need advice, OK?"
I can't say that I've ever felt that reassured after talking to a doctor. DC has lost a first-rate and supremely enjoyable man. Deepest condolences to the entire Shaffer family.

I just learned the devastating news about Dr. Shaffer. He repaired my badly torn rotator cuff several years ago when others said it was impossible.. Dr. Shaffer was a bright light, someone who had a fantastic sense of humor, was unbelievably good at what he did, and who truly cared about his patients. Each time I went in for a follow-up visit, I would compliment him on his tie, and he would proudly tell me that his daughter, Emma, picked it out. My deepest and sincerest condolences go out to his wife, children, Mother, and other members of his family. May you rest in peace now Dr. Shaffer. You will be sorely missed.
