IVAN KAUFFMAN Obituary

IVAN KAUFFMAN
Of Washington, D.C., and recently of Collegeville, Minnesota, died on July 15, 2015, at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Lois (Conrad), children Conrad and Eda, sisters Leila (MacDonald) and Patricia (Cooper), his mother, Viola (Winn), and six grandchildren. He is predeceased by his father, Jess, and sister, Wilma (Miller). Ivan was born in 1938 in Cheraw, Colorado, and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1966. He attended and received degrees from Hesston College, Goshen College, Earlham School of Religion, and Georgetown University. While his professional life was one of scholarship and writing, above all, he described himself as a poet. He leaves behind three books: two of poems and one of religious history, as well as countless essays and articles. He spent his life researching and writing on issues related to the Mennonite and Catholic faiths, peace-making, and, most recently, the religious life of Rembrandt. He lived a full life, striving always to follow his true calling. His family will miss the meals, the trips, and the warmth that was our constant companion. We will miss his impassioned discussions, his genealogy lessons, his philosophical debates, and his faith-filled life. Monday, July 27 - Funeral Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Philadelphia, PA: 10 to 11 a.m.: Reception of Remembrance, 11 a.m. Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 109 E. It is hard to believe that it is a decade since Ivan's passing. He had a great influence on me at a spiritually crucial point in my life. RIP, friend.

My cousin Ivan and I were born about the same time in Colorado and knew each other since we small boys. We kept in touch sporadically over the years as students, as young adults in Wash DC in the 60's and subsequently as we pursued our respective careers, raising our children and enjoying our grandchildren. I have fond memories of the gracious hospitality we enjoyed on our occasional visits to Ivan and Lois' home. I particularly admired Ivan's intellect and his commitment to finding commonality of the Catholic and Mennonite faith practices. He made an invaluable contribution to our family by compiling our family history from the late 1700's forward. He was an exceptional person and will be sorely missed in innumerable ways by many people he touched during his life.

I only knew Ivan for last six or seven years of his life, but he truly had an impact on me. He was one of the best men I ever met, a skilled debater who was always eager to learn. I'll miss him greatly.

Ivan will be remembered by me for his kindness and concern for others and how passionate he was about his faith and Mennonite/Catholic interfaith dialog.
My best wishes to Lois, Eda and Conrad and of course the grandchildren who adored him.

I haven't seen Ivan in over 20 years, but as a young child he made a lasting impression on me-I'll always remember him as one of the kindest and most sincere humans I've ever met. Every time we'd go visit, I'd learn something new and exciting from Ivan. One time he showed me Microsoft WINDOWS for the first time! I owe so much to the Kauffmans for so many genuine moments and acts of kindness that they shared with me over the years. My heart is heavy knowing the loss you are all feeling. Love and Prayers.
