Don Oberdorfer Obituary

Don Oberdorfer
Died peacefully with his family by his bedside on July 23, 2015 after a long struggle against Alzheimer's disease. He was 84 and lived in Washington, DC. The longtime diplomatic correspondent for the Washington Post and chairman emeritus of the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS, Don was a kind and gentle man with a big heart, inquisitive mind, and a deep dedication to his craft. His zeal for life and impish sense of humor will be sorely missed. Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Laura; his children, Daniel and Karen; Dan's wife Evelyn, and his brother, Eugene. A Memorial Service, where friends and family can share remembrances of Don, will be held at Ingleside at Rock Creek, 3050 Military Rd., N.W., Washington, DC at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015 with a reception, also at Ingleside, to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to make contributions in Don's honor donate to the Class of 1952 Memorial Fund, Princeton University, Alumni and Donor Records, P.O. Box 5357, Princeton, NJ, 08540; or Johns Hopkins University, sent care of the U.S.-Korea Institute, 1717 Massachusetts Avenue N.W., 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20036.

I got to know Don when we co-chaired a Guild committee that investigated the infamous pressmen's strike. It was a plesaure to get know a good guy from "the other side of the room." A highlight, or lowlight, was the two of us (one from National, one fro Metro) demanding, and getting, a correction from The Post's tv station about its coverage of the ensuing strike. (National and Metro.)
