LUTHER SAXON Obituary

LUTHER SAXON  1916 ~ 2017
Luther Saxon, celebrated tenor, made his final bow on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, passing away at the age of 101 at Asbury Methodist Village, where he had resided since relocating to Gaithersburg, MD. He was born on July 12, 1916 in Fairfax, South Carolina to Frank and Katie Saxon. At the age of five his parents moved their family of 10 to Springfield, Massachusetts where he discovered his interest in music. That interest, dedication and passion for music ultimately led him to New York and Broadway when he landed the lead male role of "Joe" in Oscar Hammerstein's 1943 production of the musical "Carmen Jones". Another highlight of his singing career was traveling around the world in the 50s and 60s as a lead soloist with the dePaur's Infantry Chorus. The pinnacle of his career occurred in 2009 when the National Opera Association honored him with its Lift Every Voice Legacy Award. He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory several nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and a host of friends. A memorial service will take place on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Guild Chapel in Asbury Methodist Village, 211 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Rest in peace, my friend, Luther. You'll be missed, but never forgotten. May you and Madelon continue your beautiful, musical friendship in heaven, forever.

This past September, Luther and I celebrated our 65years of friendship.I lost a very dear and wonderful friend and I will miss him so much. I am grateful that I had the privilege of seeing and hearing him perform on stage several times. What a beautiful tenor voice this handsome man had.We had so many wonderful conversations through the years. I have lost a very dear friend whom I loved very much. I thank God he was in my life. Luther, until we meet again.
