STERLING ASHBY Obituary

ASHBY STERLING TODD ASHBY Sterling Todd Ashby, 48, died peacefully in his sleep after a long struggle with brain cancer on Monday, Nov. 27, 2017. He was born on January 30, 1969 in Philadelphia, Pa. As a child, Mr. Ashby was an avid comic book collector and that interest lead him to create History In Action Toys, a company focused on creating educational toys for young people. Mr. Ashby was a lawyer with expertise in government contracting, corporate finance, governance and commercial lending. He began his legal career at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. But his passion was fundraising for nonprofits and connecting people to opportunities to grow themselves and their businesses. He served as the Board Chair for DC Lawyers for Youth; a board member for Seabury Resources for Aging, Inc.; a board member for DC SCORES; and as a trustee for the Lehigh University Alumni Board. Mr. Ashby presented at several conferences, meetings, and forums, including Columbia Law School, the National Bar Association and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Ashby earned his J.D. degree from Columbia University School of Law, following an M.S. in Science and Technology Studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a B.S. from Lehigh University in Industrial Engineering. His early years were spent at the influential Milton Hershey School in Pennsylvania, a cost-free, private, co-residential school and home. Mr. Ashby is survived by his mother, Theodora Ashby; sister, Michelle Smalley and nephew, Able Smalley; sister, Phillipa Ashby; brother-in-law, Malik Benin, and a host of relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John T. Frost. Funeral services will be held on Monday December 4, 2017 at St Luke's Episcopal Church, 1514 15th St, NW Washington DC 20005. Viewing will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the service starts at 1 p.m.

In 1987 I was the Gryphon at Hillside House at Lehigh University. Other schools call Gryphons resident assistants. I remember when I first met Sterling. I believe his mom and his sisters dropped him off. I saw how loved he was. My first impression of Sterling was that he was a great young man.

As the year went on, I got to know him more and more. Sterling was kind hearted, gentle, driven, soft spoken intelligent and serious. He was the type of friend that everyone should have.

For some reason, 36 years after I graduated from Lehigh and last saw Sterling, he popped into my mind today. I said to myself let me look him up. I bet he did great things. I was shocked to learn that he was called to heaven so early. I am not sure if he ever became a dad, but I hope he did. Can you imagine the futures of children raised by Sterling? Children raised with love, encouragement, patience, by an unparalleled role model become phenomenal human beings.

As for his accomplishments, I knew he would be great. He had great personal success and he worked hard to make sure other people could succeed as well. I am glad our paths crossed.

You always had a great outlook on everything and you were a good classmate at MHS. Such a calm cool and collective guy, yet an animal on the wrestling mat! You have touched so many people, we will meet again someday my friend.

Sterling and I met at Skadden when I was a librarian there. We re-connected on LinkedIn. Such an impressive, smart, thoughtful man! This world is a lesser place without him. May your memories comfort you.

I am so sorry to learn of Sterling's passing. We reconnected in 2014 when he convinced me to get office space in WeWork. I moved to NC last year and I was just thinking about reaching out to him to do some legal work.
Gone way too soon. May your memories be of comfort during this time.
