Of Silver Spring, MD, entered Eternal Rest on Monday, April 1, 2002 at the University of Louisville Hospital, Louisville, KY. Mr. Awkard was a retired machinist at the Navy Ordinance Laboratory in White Oak, MD, a veteran of World War II, a member of the Negro Baseball League, having played from 1939 to 1941 with the Washington Royal Giants, New York Cuban Stars and the Newark Eagles. He was a life member of the NAACP, a member of the American Legion and Sharp Street United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn M. Awkard; four sons, Rev. A. Russell, Michael L. and Walter P. Awkard and George Waters; three sisters, Deborah Dupree, Phyllis Smith and Grace Breedlove; four brothers, Woodruff, Leon, Cornelius and George Awkard. He also leaves five grandchildren, three daughters-in-law, Ann and Jennifer Awkard and Phyllis Waters; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Family will receive friends at the Sharp Street United Methodist Church, 1310 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd., Sandy Spring, MD on Friday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Sharp Street United Methodist Church or the Alzheimers Association. Arrangements by SNOWDEN FUNERAL HOME.
