Berg, Catherine "Katie"  
Berg, Catherine "Katie" Catherine C. "Katie" Berg, 92, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Stone Crest, Wausau. Catherine was born June 7, 1923 to the late Albert and Lottie Ebersold in Wausau. She spent her early school years at Grant Elementary school and graduated from the Wausau Senior High School in 1941. While in High School, Katie helped with Sunday School at Hall Memorial Chapel, and later with the young children at First Presbyterian. She also served on the Board of Deacons at the church. She worked for the City Electrical Dept. and the Wausau YWCA before enlisting in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. After training she was assigned to the 6th Naval District Intelligence Offices, with headquarters in Charleston, SC. Following the war she returned to her work at the YWCA and later took a job with Marathon County, working for the County Agent Associate. On July 24, 1948 Katie married Russell W. "Spike" Berg at the First Presbyterian Church in Wausau. They spent six years in Sparta, WI and in November 1953 she gave birth to a son, Philip. They returned to Wausau in 1956. The couple operated the souvenir stand at the top of Rib Mountain along with good friends, Jim and Helen Ellingson. Katie enjoyed preparing meals for friends and family with a wide variety of recipes. She enjoyed golfing, camping in the Northwood's, and traveling throughout the U.S. in the family pop-up trailer. She was a proud Navy veteran often attending reunions in Charleston, SC. Catherine is survived by one son, Philip T. Berg, Wausau; one grandson, Pierce A. Berg, Colorado Springs, CO; and a sister in-law, Carol (Berg) Schultz of New London, WI. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert Anton and Lottie Belle (Eschenbach) Ebersold and husband, Russell Waldemar Berg who died in February of 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church, 406 Grant St., Wausau. Rev. Joy Nelson-Jeffers will officiate. Burial will be at the Pine Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau, is assisting the family with arrangements.
