Beatrice M. Matteson
Beatrice Marie (Gunderson) Matteson, 93 of the village of Elderon, WI died Friday, July 25, 2014 in her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on January 17, 1921 in Elderon, the daughter of the late Otto and Minnie (West) Gunderson.
Beatrice graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1939 and went on to College in Wausau, WI to obtain a teaching degree. Later she continued her education at UW-Stevens Point and St. Coletta to obtain a license to teach Special Education.
Beatrice was united in marriage on November 5, 1942 to Floyd B. Matteson of Wausau. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2005.
Beatrice lived and taught school in the Elderon area most of her life. She began her teaching career in one-room schoolhouse in rural Elderon: The Bungalow School, Ingersol and The Fairview School, Galloway, WI. She substituted in the Wittenberg Public Schools during her child-rearing years and helped her father and brother in the potato fields and warehouses during the summer months. When her children grew up, Beatrice taught Special Education as well as second grade at the Wittenberg Elementary for 23 years.
Beatrice is survived by her three children: Floyd Otto (Marlene) Matteson, Elderon, WI, DiAnn Rae Matteson, Rodeo, NM and Mary Ann (William) Hart, Eland, WI. Beatrice is also survived by seven grandchildren: Floyd Darin Matteson, Elderon, WI, Brian (Cindy) Matteson, Wittenberg, WI, Brad (Paula) Matteson, Merrill, WI, Jodi (Jeff) Froehlich, Wausau, WI, Hilary (James) Schreiber, Birnamwood, WI, Nathaniel (Brooke) Hart, Dunlap, IL, and Andrew Hart, LaCrosse, WI and 11 great-grandchildren: Ashly Matteson, Wyatt Matteson, Nonah Matteson, Hilory Matteson, Lydia Matteson, Daniel Froehlich,
Jacob Froehlich, Anastasia Schreiber, Addison Schreiber, Azalea Hart, and Mazer Hart.
In addition to her husband and parents, her brother, Gordon Gunderson, and granddaughter, Cheri Steckbauer, preceded her in death.
Beatrice enjoyed "giving" to others. She believed in honesty and lived by the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She loved reading and listening to game shows on TV, volunteer work (Homme Home of Wittenberg) and faithfully attending church services. She was an active member and held offices in both the Our Savior's Ladies Aide and the VFW
Ladies Auxiliary, Post 8068, in Elderon.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on Hwy 49 in Elderon. Rev. Harvey Abrahamson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 30 and Thursday, July 31 from 9:30 AM until the time of the service all at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Rest Cemetery, Elderon.
