Irene Sharkey, 101, Mosinee, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Evergreen Assisted Living on Friday, February 1, 2013.

She was born March 26, 1911 to the late Andrew and Anna (Kosley) Marko in Streator, IL. Her family soon moved to the Ashley residence where they farmed.

Irene, her sister, Elsie and several childhood friends formed the Ashley Old-timers Get Together which has continued every year to the present time.

She married Sylvester Sharkey in 1931 in Stevens Point. They resided in Mosinee until Sylvester's death, November 18, 1955.

Irene began her long tenure as a cook and eventually as the head cook for the last 17 years at the Mosinee School District.

Irene was an active member of St. Agnes Circle of St. Monica's Council of St. Paul's Catholic Church. She volunteered to help serve meals for weddings and funerals held at St. Paul's. She loved gardening, canning and preserving the fruits of her labors, sewing, bowling, golfing and was an avid supporter of all her children's and grandchildren's events and activities. She began golfing after retiring and stopped in her 90's. Irene's sewing expertise expanded to include many log cabin design quilts which she presented as gifts to each of her children and grandchildren. She received a congratulatory message from President Obama on her 100th birthday.

Irene was a prolific traveler, visiting the entire U.S. and several trips to Europe. One trip she enjoyed the blessings of the Pope at the Vatican. Not until her late 80's and 90's did she become a snowbird, living with a daughter in Florida.

Survivors include five of her nine children, MaryAnn (Robert) Seidler, Mosinee, Yvonne (Emil) Albert, Cape Coral, FL, Jerome (Kathy) Sharkey, Patrick (Joan) Sharkey and Debra (David) Beske all of Mosinee; 24 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren; three daughters-in-law, Barbara Sharkey, Rhinelander, RoseMary Sharkey, Mosinee and Judith Sharkey, Cape Coral, FL.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Leroy, Eugene, Adrian and James; eleven siblings, including her sister, Elsie (Clinton) Sullivan; brother, George (Mathilda) Marko, both resided in Mosinee and a great granddaughter, Adrianna Majeski.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday February 8, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee. Rev. Donald Przybylski will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Mosinee. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday February 7, 2013 at Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee where at 6:00 p.m. there will be a rosary service. Visitation will resume Friday from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
