Joseph Donald Brooks, 89, Waterford, WI, died Monday, August 19, in Burlington, Wisconsin. He was born September 24, 1923 in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of Clark and Emma (Aber) Brooks.
Joe served with Lima Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines during World War II
. He participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal-Solomon Islands, where he earned the Purple Heart
; and in the Battle of Cape Gloucester-New Guinea.
He graduated from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio where he met his wife, Dorothy (Dennis). They moved to Zanesville, where he worked as a sales representative for Black and Grant Wholesale Dry Goods Co. In 1961 the family moved to Stevens Point. He worked for Medick-Barrows Co. and later for Hartcraft Frame Co., Hartford, selling to photography studios in Wisconsin and the surrounding states.
Joe played tennis in his younger years, later enjoyed playing golf, watching the Packers, Brewers and other sporting events. He was an avid reader of books, magazines and the daily newspaper. In retirement, Joe and "Dot" enjoyed winters in Florida, then several years in Boulder City, Nevada, before returning to Wisconsin in 2003. Together, they also traveled around the USA, even camping in a Volkswagen Vanagon.
Joe is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children Patricia (Mike) Gaska, Rothschild; David (Yayoi), Marathon; Thomas and Gregory, Stevens Point; Cynthia (Timothy) Boudreau, Wausau; Anthony (Cynthia), Waterford and Martin, Milwaukee. His grandchildren Kati (Jody) Maier, Ryan (Becky Bowman Kuehn) Gaska, Sanae (Hide) Eba, Mayumi, Nathan and Grant Brooks, Ivy and Bailey Boudreau, by great-grandchildren Teagan and Chloe Maier, and by his sister, Sr. Raymunda Brooks OP, Columbus, Ohio. He is further survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, mostly in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Gerald.
Joe was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars
, the Military Order of The Purple Heart, the First Marine Division Association, St. Thomas Parish, Waterford and formerly of St. Joseph Parish, Stevens Point.
The family is grateful for the care of the Veterans Affairs hospitals and staff in Union Grove, Madison and Milwaukee, as well as the staff of Burlington Hospital.
