Robert R "Bob" Scherer, 83, of Weston, passed Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Wausau, WI. He is reunited with his beloved wife, his folks and family and many dear friends that journeyed ahead to welcome him home.
Bob was born January 5, 1929, the oldest child to the late Bernard (Bernie) and Margaret (Leanna) Scherer in West Allis, Wisconsin. He often talked about working odd jobs as a young man and serving as altar boy at church. He joined the US Air Force
at the time of the Korean War
and had obtained the rank of Sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1952. He and the former Joyce Vander Schaaf were married January 20, 1951. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2011.
Bob & Joyce were married on January 20, 1951 by the justice of the peace in Wausau. The church blessed their marriage in March 1951 at the Catholic Church in West Allis, WI.
The newlyweds moved to Wausau, WI where Bob worked for the DeGelleke Company of Milwaukee as a carpenter. They took up residence in the east side neighborhood of Park Avenue where they met many great friends, remaining friends to this day. During the early years they were involved in "Stunt Night" and the PTA with their children's grade school, Franklin School.
Many summer weekends were spent camping with friends at Bumbers campground on Muskellunge Lake near Tomahawk, WI. In 1971 the couple took over the Arrow Bar & Café in Weston. Bob will always be remembered for his fall corn roasts at the bar and that he would give anyone the shirt off his back. He would not say "no" to anyone who asked him to do a favor. In 1984 Bob & Joyce retired from the tavern business and together they became caretakers at Whiplash, a private estate near Hayward WI. He maintained the trails for golf carts in the summer and both cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months. Many great super bowl weekends were had at "the penthouse" with lots of family and many friends. They were also able to travel to Washington, DC and take in the sights during that time. In 1995 they moved to their retirement home at R&R Bay view on the Big Chip. Bob and Joyce moved back to Weston in 2008 to be closer to family
