Vivian Detert

Detert, Vivian

Vivian H. Detert (Hapke), 76, died Tuesday January 8, 2013 at Mount View Care Center, under the care of Aspirus Hospice and Comfort Care. She was born September 29th, 1936 in Wausau, WI, the daughter of Mathilda and John Hapke Sr.

Growing up near the Downtown Airport, Viv spent many hours there with her friend, Margie Towle. As a teen, she babysat for Marie Grimm's children, worked at the local drug store and helped out at her parents business, Hapke's Bar and Café.

On July 25th, 1955, Viv married her high school sweetheart, Ronald L. Detert, who survives. Right after their marriage, they traveled to New Port, RI where Ron was stationed on a Destroyer in the US Navy. During that time, Viv worked for Western Electric Co. in Dundock, MD. She was an Inspector for continuity of telephone wires and cables. Later, she moved to Oswego New York to live with her parents while Ron was overseas. After Ron's discharge from the Navy, they moved back to Wausau and Viv did waitress work at various nightclubs in the Wausau area. Retiring from waitress work, Viv then set her life about raising her children.

Viv' s life revolved around her family, and grandchildren. She always put them first and never missed an opportunity to let each of them know how much they were loved and special to her. Her children and grandchildren all have wonderful memories of Viv rocking and singing to them, whether it was to sooth hurt feelings, fix an "owie", or just because. Viv was a huge lover of animals and was the best "pet" parent and grandparent to all the family pets throughout the years, spoiling them terribly, and then grieving for the ones that had passed as if they were her children.

Viv had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed having a good time. She especially enjoyed making other's happy. She loved music and dancing; waltz's, jitter bug, swing, and a multitude of her own moves that were uniquely hers when out "cutting a rug" with Ron.

Viv loved and respected people, always enjoying an opportunity to get to know someone new and making them a lifelong friend. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, crafting many homemade gifts for family, friends and even strangers. She loved cooking for her family and in the later years, trips to the Casino.

The greatest gift Viv leaves behind is the gift of unconditional love, which she practiced every day of her life. For this gift, her family celebrates the honor of having her in their lives and will continue to follow her example.

Viv is survived by her husband, Ronald Detert, Wausau, her children Pam (Roger) Schwede, Chrissy (Mike "Skinney") Seidler, and Mike (Maggie) Detert, all of Wausau. Her most precious grandchildren, Lisa, James, Chad, Dr. Sarah, Brandon, Katrina, John (Taylor), Jeremiah and Annie. Her brother John Hapke Jr. and her mother Mathilda Hapke, both of St. Petersburg FL. She is further survived by sisters and brothers in law, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Ronald Jr., her Father, John Hapke Sr., her Brother Harry Hapke, her Mother and Father in Law, Meta and Edward Detert.

The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Aspirus Hospice and Comfort Care and Mount View Care Center, particularly the special staff on Northern Reflections.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11:00 am. At John J. Buettgen Funeral Home, Schofield. Chaplin Theresa Deleavan officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
