Richard O. Viegut, 82, Rhinelander, died on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Ministry St. Mary's Hospital, Rhinelander with his family by his side.
He was born on May 18, 1931 in the town of Wein, Marathon County, the son of the late Elmer and Mamie (Hagen) Viegut.
On January 24, 1952, Richard was drafted and served in the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge on January 14, 1954, Richard was employed at Patrick Cudahy, Cudahy.
On July 23, 1960, Richard was united in marriage to Verna Schmidt at St. John's Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. She survives.
In 1962 the couple moved to Rhinelander where he was a heavy equipment operator (Forest Fire Control) for the Department of Natural Resources, retiring on July 31, 1988. Richard enjoyed traveling, fishing, reading, driving and trips to Canada.
In addition to his wife Verna Viegut, Rhinelander, survivors include two sisters-in-law, Joanne Viegut, Marathon, Carol Viegut, Wausau and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his siblings; Darlene Grieser, Lucille Steiner, Dorothy Lueschow, Karen Viegut, Robert, David and William Viegut.
A Memorial service will be held at 12 NOON on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. The Rev. John Meachen will officiate. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the Darling-Gunderson Post #341 American Legion, Birnamwood.
