Barry W Young, age 82, passed away on July 19, 2014, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI.
Barry was born on September 23, 1931 in Minneapolis to Veronica Crass (Young). He moved with his family at a young age to Tomahawk, WI. As a young adult he worked on the railroad, delivered beer, cut meat and installed TV antennas. In 1951 he joined the Army National Guard and was commissioned as an officer in 1953. He was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-62. Barry moved through the ranks and held several positions with the First Battalion 632 Armor, including Commander. He went on to become Executive Officer of the 32nd Infantry Brigade, obtained the rank of Brigadier General and served as the Deputy Adjutant General of the State of WI. In 1987 he retired from the military, and went on to work for Hazelton Laboratories (now Covance) from which he retired in 1994. Barry was very active in the Waunakee community including the American Legion, Waunakee-Westport Lions Club, Peace Lutheran Church, and the Village of Waunakee Board of Review. He also volunteered for the Northland College Fundraising Committee and ESGR.
Barry met the love of his life Nancy Lee Peck in 1949. They married on April 19th, 1952, and were together for 50 years until Nancy's death in May of 2002. Every 19th of the month he gave Nancy a rose to celebrate what he said was the best decision he ever made. Barry was also preceded in death by his mother, brother, Ken Crass and sister, Sandy Stieber.
Barry is survived by his daughter Cindy Morris (Ron), son James Young, son Bill Young (Dawn), granddaughters Kelsey Morris, Olivia Young and Sydney Young and grandsons Max Young, Pavel Young and Christopher (CJ) Young. He is further survived by sisters Sherry Thompson (Tomahawk) and Carol Jarvensivu (Brantwood), brother s Art Crass (Medford) and Ron Crass (Tomahawk) and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Winn Cress Funeral Home in Waunakee, WI on Thursday August 7th from 4:00 - 7:00pm and also on Friday August 8th from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Peace Lutheran Church in Waunakee. Services will follow at 11:00 am. Rev Karen Locken will preside. Miltary Honors will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens in Cottage Grove at 2:30 pm.
The family would like to thank Pine View Assisted Living, UW Hospital and Agrace Hospice for their care in his last years and final days. Barry was a man of great character and humor. He was hard working and well respected by his peers. The best part of him was the love he had for his family. He will truly be missed.
