Blume, Gloria

Gloria Alice Blume, 84, Wausau, died peacefully at Gardenside Crossings, North Central Health Care Center, on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

Gloria was born November 08, 1928 to the late Frederick and Martha (Lemke) Rasmussen. She married Walter A. Blume on October 22, 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Wausau. He preceded her in death.

Gloria possessed many talents in life, but in her heart, Gloria was an artist. Without any formal training could capture any image and see the beauty in all things. Anyone meeting her, even briefly, recognized her selfless heart and interest in others. In her youth she worked for the Weller family, Winkleman's Department Store and at the telephone company. She met the love of her life, Walter (Bud) Blume and they raised and cherished their seven children. Despite many challenges in life, Gloria always saw the positive in people and encouraged them to be their best. Her early years in the Great Depression formed her practical side that she used to manage her children with a keen eye for fairness to all. She could make something wonderful from anything others considered scrap or leftover. Halloween costumes, first day of school outfits, or high school dance dresses all came from her heart and her hands. She cooked and served meals that brought all of the neighborhood kids in for a feast and she never tired of tending to anyone down on their luck. She was especially fond of raising orchids and could nurture any to blossom. She obtained her driver's license in her mid-30's and would pack the entire family and their needs into one vehicle for a venture to a local park with homemade treats in the picnic basket. In her 40's she took on a part-time job at the local "Schade's" Tavern and was the first woman to change the City of Wausau ordinance prohibiting female bartending without a man's supervision. In her mid-50's she attended Northcentral Technical College and earned her CNA certificate. She also worked as a financial secretary for St. Mathew Catholic Church. In 1984 Gloria traveled to Moscow to join her husband during his management of the construction of the US Embassy. It was the last trip they shared before she was widowed in June of that same year. She later discovered a special friendship in her companion Robert (Bob) Klos and they spent many evenings enjoying ballroom dancing. Gloria was unbelievably lucky at the casino and donated generously to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the Southwest Indian Foundation, and Disabled Veterans.

Survivors include her children; Alicia Buehler, Schofield, Jeffrey (Annmarie) Blume, Wausau, Wendy (Robert) Gaffney, Wausau, Constance (Joseph) Conrad, Wausau, Anthony (Kim) Blume, Schofield, Rebecca (Jeffrey) Fochs, Wausau; sister Joan (Jack) Pregont, FL; grandchildren Kyle, Chris, Dan, Alaina, Shannon, Justin, Ben, Dan, Jessica, Alyssa, Amanda, Maggie, Jeff Jr and Kevin; Great Grandchildren Harper, Brody, Taylor, Samantha, Lily, Hattie Jo, Chandler, Addie and future great granddaughter Marlie; sister-in-law Germaine Conway, Wausau.

Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Blume; daughter, Stephanie Arndt; sister, Pat Hansen; and brother Roger Rasmussen.
