Jerome "Joe" Edward Schmitz passed from this life to his eternal one on June 17, 2012, while in the care of the Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Joe was born in Wausau on July 7, 1925 and spent the majority of his life there. He proudly served his country in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Air Force, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sargent. He retired after 20 plus years of service to his country. Joe was a member of the VFW Burns Post #388 and American Legion Montgomery-Plant Post #10. He was also a retired U.S. Postal worker.

Joe married his wife of 59 years, Ramona Cole of Stratford on April 25, 1953.

Joe enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their cabin up north. He loved hunting, fishing, and traveling. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona and his four children, Debra Kaetterhenry of Oconto, Sandra (James) Bird of Las Vegas, David (Stacey) Schmitz of Pittsville, and Scott (fiancée Jill) Schmitz of Weston; two sisters in-law, Orleata Leffel and Lorraine Klatt of Stratford; 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; one aunt, Irene Schmitz; cousins and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leona (Deininger) Schmitz, his sister, Arleen and husband, Earl Graveen.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 621 2nd St. Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. on Thursday until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Brainard Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
