Mathias "Matt" Talmoore Baker, age 83, of rural Ettrick, died on Monday, June 10, 2013 in Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse.

Matt was born on February 15, 1930, to Cecil and Mae (Brennan) Baker in Wilton Junction, IA, as the youngest of six brothers. He attended Wilton Schools. Matt was united in marriage to Alice Oakland on December 2, 1950, in the North Beaver Creek Parish Faith Lutheran Church in rural Ettrick.

Matt served as a paratrooper and medic with the 82nd. Airborne from 1948 until his honorable discharge in 1950. He then became employed by Wilton Electric and Telephone Contracting which was instrumental in converting the LaCrosse Telephone Company to the dial system. In 1952 he began working for Community Telephone Company in Black River Falls as a cable splicer. Community soon became a part of General Telephone Company of Wisconsin.

Matt taught the first cable splicing class for GTE in Portage. While living in Blair for nine years, he was a splicer and installer/repairman. In 1961, he was transferred to Wausau and worked in various capacities for GTE.

Matt's interests included flying and auctioneering. He received his private pilot's license from Grimm's Flying Service in Wausau and enjoyed renting a plane and observing the area from the air. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

After retiring from GTE in 1984, Matt graduated from the World Wide School of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA.

Matt was also known as being able to repair almost anything and enjoyed hobby farming.

In 1988, Matt and Alice bought Alice's home farm in North Beaver Creek, rural Ettrick, which has been in the Oakland family since 1857.

Matt and Alice enjoyed bus trips to various events.

Matt is survived by his wife, Alice; a daughter, Sherry Baker Lawrence of Detroit Lakes, MN; a son, Clair (Bille) Baker of Wausau; three grandchildren, J.R. Lawrence, David Wolf and Monica Baker; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Kelsey Lawrence.

In addition to his parents, Matt was preceded in death by five brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the North Beaver Creek Faith Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery both in rural Ettrick. Pastor Elizabeth Albertson will officiate.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
