Balgord, Robert

Robert Balgord passed away peacefully in Gulf Shores, Ala., on Feb. 27, 2013, at the age of 90. He was a longtime resident of Wausau. He was born Nov. 21, 1922, in New Lisbon, Wis. to Alice and Otto Balgord. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard, Kenneth, Roy, Richard, and his son, John.

Bob married the love of his life, Charlene White in 1948. They had seven children, John, Nicole (Scott Heine), Robin (Tom Busihan), Andrea (Stephan Saeger), Christian (Cassanda Behm), Matthew (Sun) and Rosalie (Lee Bolin). He was abundantly blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In his early years, Bob worked for the Milwaukee Road Railroad as a telegrapher. In the '60s he became a realtor and enjoyed a long career with Security Realty. He loved spending time at the Woodson Y.M.C.A. and attributed his long healthy life to it. Bob was a proud member of the Masonic Order. He was a faithful member of Wesley Methodist Church. He supported The Salvation Army, Wausau East High and Y.M.C.A. scholarships and other charitable organizations. In 2012, as a WWII vet, was privileged to travel to D.C. with the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.

Bob loved politics, travel, and history, but above all, he loved his family. "Family first" was his motto. His favorite holiday was Memorial Day, which he celebrated each year in his hometown, New Lisbon, paying respect to fallen heroes and loved ones as well enjoying the reunion of family and friends. He made that celebration a priority only missing once while serving overseas.

Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Monday, Mar. 11, 4 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church 1101 Elm St. Wausau, Wis.

Memorials may be given in his honor to the Shriners Childrens Hospital and the Woodson Y.M.C.A. Scholarship Program.
