Gene Loeffel, age 84 of Wausau, was called to his heavenly home unexpectedly on Monday, July 21st. Eugene (Gene) Frank Loeffel was born April 10, 1930 in Wausau to the late George and Anna (Walters) Loeffel. He was a graduate of Wausau High School and began his career in accounting at D.J. Murray Mfg. Co. On August 23, 1952, Gene married Arlene Kolpitcke at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, and together they were blessed with their only child, Clark. Gene proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 376th Financial Management Support Unit and part-time on the Marathon County Sheriff's Department. For many years Gene co-owned and operated Seim Brothers Men's Clothing Store in downtown Wausau. Gene retired as a licensed real estate broker, and then enjoyed part-time work for 13 years as a funeral assistant at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. He was a lifelong active member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. In his earlier years, he served as a Luther League youth sponsor, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and as an usher and president of the congregation. He was also known as the voice of the St. Stephen's radio broadcasts for several years.
Gene had fond memories of many years of deer hunting, camping and fishing with good friends. He happily served as a loyal poll worker for many years. He especially treasured time with his family, and was always there to support his "favorite" granddaughter, Gina, in all her school and sporting activities.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Arlene, son, Clark (Ann) Loeffel of Kronenwetter, and granddaughter, Gina Loeffel of Schofield. Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Donald.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 512 McClellan St., Wausau. Reverend Alan Schaffmeyer will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. You may sign our family guest book at helke.com.
