Ivan J. "Ike" Ackerman, 72, of Waverly, passed away on Friday, Dec. 16, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Ike was born on Jan. 23, 1939, the son of John E. and Alice (Ruter) Ackerman in Allison, Iowa. He was baptized on March 23, 1939 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Allison. He received his bachelor's degree in political science and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Iowa.
On Aug. 23, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Janssen at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. He was confirmed on Aug. 11, 1963 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He practiced law with Engelbrecht, Ackerman & Hassman in Waverly from 1963 until his retirement in December 2009
He served as the mayor of Waverly from 1998 to 2010, Wartburg's Board of Regents from 1980 to 1992, Board at Waverly Light & Power, Board at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home, Commission of Wartburg Task Force on Admissions and Financial Aid.
Ike was a charter member of the Waverly Economic Development Company, past president of the Waverly Chamber of Commerce, Waverly Rotary Club, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He received the Waverly Chamber Citizenship Award in 1992. Ike was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and Cubs fan and helped with numerous community projects.
Survivors are his wife, Mary of Waverly; son, Nile (Jackie) Ackerman of Johnston; daughter, Janet Peterson of Forest, Minn.; five grandchildren; and by a sister, Ardis (John) Bordman of Concord, Mass.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Gene Ackerman.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will follow in the Harlington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or to the donor's choice and online condolences for Ike may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.

Ike will be remembered for all of his great contributions, his thought of others, tireless work to improve the lives of others and his humor. It is a pleasure to say I knew and respected him a great deal.
