Francis Carl "Fritz" Thompson Jr., 66, of Shell Rock, died early Wednesday morning, April 24, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Fritz was born on March 11, 1947, in Waverly, the son of Francis Carl Sr. and Helen (Hill) Thompson. He attended the Waverly-Shell Rock School System and on April 6, 1964, Fritz entered the U.S. Navy
during the Vietnam War
. He served for twoyears and 11 days as a Boatsman's Mate with the USS Whetstone. Fritz was honorably discharged from active duty on July 19, 1967. After serving in the Navy, Fritz worked as a barber, and owned and operated several different barber shops. Later, he worked as a siding applicator and carpenter.
For enjoyment, Fritz was an avid reader; he also liked to watch movies.
Fritz is survived by his mother, Helen Thompson of Shell Rock; brothers, Alexander "Alex" (Evelyn) Thompson of Waverly and Glen "Sam" Thompson of Liberty, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1989, and brother, Larry, in 1996.
According to Fritz's wishes, his body has been cremated, and no public services are planned. Memorials may be directed to the Benny Gambaiani Library in Shell Rock, Cedar Valley Hospice, or the family. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
