Alfred L. "Al" Disrud, 92, of Waverly, and formerly of North Dakota and Minnesota, died on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly from complications of cancer.

Alfred was born on Jan. 23, 1921, in McIntosh, S.D., the son of Michael and Ruth (Dybing) Disrud. Alfred, known to many of his North Dakota friends as "Pete," was baptized in 1943 in Shields, N.D. He attended school in Shields, N.D., graduating in 1939 from the Cyrus High School, Cyrus, Minn. Following high school, he worked as a grocery clerk and as a production line employee of Consolidated Aircraft Company in San Diego before entering the U.S. Army Air Force in July of 1942. While in the service, Al was an Army Air Force radio operator and technician and spent two-and-a-half years in Foreign Service in the Asiatic Pacific (where he received two bronze battle stars) and in the Philippines (where he received one battle star and a good conduct medal). Al was honorably discharged in October of 1945 with the rank of Corporal. Al then attended the University of Minnesota from 1945 to 1949, receiving his B.A. in journalism and minor in advertising.

On Jan. 12, 1950, Al was united in marriage to Ruth I. Bergan at Sion Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Al's employment included Lake Mills Graphic Newspaper Editor from 1950-57, Monroe Mirror Newspaper Editor & Co-Publisher, where Alfred sponsored the National Field Days in 1956 when President Dwight (Mamie) Eisenhower were in attendance; Waldorf College Administrative Assistant to President and Director of Development from 1957 to 1966; Wartburg College Vice President for Development from 1969 to 1986; and CUNA Mutual Insurance Company Trustee of Mutual Funds from 1987 until his retirement in 1994. Al remained in his home in Waverly until July 2009 when he became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Al is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Ruth Disrud, of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly; two sons, John A. Disrud (Sue), of Waverly, and Daniel L. Disrud (Jane), of Plainfield; a sister, Agnes Rodenbough, of Rapid City, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Helen Disrud of Sun City, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Henry in 1974 and Herman in 1990.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly with Rev. Dan Kahl officiating. Public visitation will be held at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. and also for one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Military honors will be held following services at the church by the Waverly Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be held at a later date in the Sion Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Memorials may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
