Dean Allan Petersen, 63, of Frederika, Iowa, died on Sunday evening, March 30, 2014, from complications of cancer.
Dean was born on July 21, 1950 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Elnora (Luhring) Petersen. He attended Tripoli Community School where he graduated in 1968. Dean served in the United States Army from February 10, 1970 until he was honorably discharged on December 4, 1971. His decorations and medals include, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Stars, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. On April 23, 1972, Dean was united in marriage to Annette Fuerstenberg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, the couple later divorced. Dean worked as a horse trainer and farm manager in Minnesota, Kentucky and Florida.
He was a member of St. John's Western Douglas Church near Plainfield. Dean was elected in January of 2010, as a member of the Frederika City Council serving until 2012 and in 2013, was honored as the Chief of the Wapsie during the Frederika 4th of July celebration. In his spare time Dean enjoyed watching the guys fish at the dam, watching all sports including little league baseball, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings football. One of Dean's favorite things to do was to ride around Frederika in his golf cart.
Dean is survived by his brothers Duane (Ilene) Petersen of Sumner, Dale (Jane) Petersen of Fredericksburg and Donald (Julie) Petersen of Frederika. Dean is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Ranae (Kevin) Carey, Craig (Sally) Petersen, Kimberly (Joshua) Meyer, Brandon Petersen (fiancé Julie Stange), Brent (Amanda) Petersen, Bethany (Gene) Schellhorn, Kara (Matt Rosenbaum) Petersen, Luke (Nicole) Hicok, Wes Hicok, and Tyler (Kristin) Hicok. Great nieces & nephew, Courtney, Ben, Cameron, Megan, Wade, Jonah, Hattie, Nathan, Damian, Anthony and Cadence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur, in 1981 and Elnora in 1986.
According to his wishes, Dean has been cremated and a memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Western Douglas Church, rural Plainfield, with Rev. Kim Thacker presiding. Burial of his cremains will be in the church cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by the Brandenburg-Krueger V.F.W. Post #4013 of Tripoli. Family will greet friends on Friday, April 4 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.
