Eugene "Gene" Drape, 78, of Waverly died on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Gene was born on June 19, 1935, the son of Ruben and Edna (Krueger) Drape in Warren Township, Bremer County. He attended Warren #4 Country School and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1953. He entered the armed services, serving in the Air Force from 1955 until his discharge in 1959. On June 26, 1960, he was united in marriage to Ruth Weidler at St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church in Waverly. Gene then continued his education at Iowa State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and later received his Master of Science degree from West Coast University. Eugene worked in various positions and communities, including Philco Ford, Ford Aerospace, Pitney Bowes, Abex Corporation and Outokumpu Copper Franklin, Inc, where he served as president and general manager. Gene retired in 2000, returning to the Waverly community to farm with his brother.
Gene was an active volunteer and leader in the Waverly community, serving in a variety of roles: a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church; on the Board of Directors for Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community; the Waverly Rotary Club; at Wartburg College on the Business National Advisory Board, Keep on Learning Steering Committee and Artist Series Board and a leadership donor to the music program in honor of his wife, Ruth Weidler Drape. Since 2007, Gene was the chair of Waverly Light and Power. In 2011, he received the Wartburg medal, recognizing significant service over a sustained period of time to the college, respresenting a personal commitment to the college's mission, quality and character.
Survivors are his two sons, Douglas (Kim) Drape of Vashon Island, Wash. and Christopher (Christine) Drape of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Zachary, Mara, Andrew and Matthew; two brothers, Vernon (Betty) Drape of Mt. Horeb, Wis. and David (Phoebe) Drape of Waverly; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Drape of Waverly and Charlotte Blasberg of Tripoli; and special friend, Charlotte Johnston of Waverly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on May 9, 2002; his parents; and brother, Allan Drape.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Lissa Kahl officiating. Burial will follow in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
