Rick J. Hartman, 61, of Waverly, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at his home in Waverly from complications of brain cancer.

Rick was born on Dec. 6, 1951, in Waverly, the son of Donald R. and Elaine D. (Steege) Hartman. He was baptized on Jan. 13, 1952, and confirmed on May 1, 1966, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. His family lived in Denver, where he attended school through the first grade. In 1959, Rick's family moved to Waverly where he continued his education in the Waverly-Shell Rock school system, graduating in 1970. Starting in 1964, Rick worked for his father, Don Hartman, at the Phillip's 66 station, and became manager of the station in the 1970s. He also managed the Phillip's station in Cresco for a short period of time in the mid 80s. In 1990, Rick started Hartman Services, a lawn care and snow removal business, which he owned and operated until Oct. 1, 2013. On Oct. 13, 1990, Rick was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Grant) Scott.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Hartman, of Waverly; step-daughter, Lisa (Jose) Martinez, of San Francisco Bay area; two granddaughters, Sofia and Isabella; mother, Elaine Hartman, of Waverly; brother, Larry (Sharron) Hartman, of Waverly; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Hartman, on Dec. 3, 2002.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with the Rev. Dr. Judith Jones, and the Revs. Maureen Doherty and Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and will continue for an hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family, Cedar Valley Hospice and University of Iowa and Mayo Clinic for research of Glioblastoma.
