Gary Lester Boorom, 73, of Waverly, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Gary was born March 19, 1940, the son of Lester and Dahlia (Krueger) Boorom in Waverly. He was baptized in 1940 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. Gary was a 1958 graduate of Waverly High School. On Oct. 8, 1973, he was united in marriage to Dita Woolsey in Marshalltown. Gary dedicated his entire working career to fire service. He was a fireman with the Ames Fire Department for eight years. He then began selling fire equipment as well as teaching at the ISU Fire Service Extension, both posts he held for over 30 years.

Gary served on the Waverly City Council for 18 years and was currently serving out his fifth elected term. His years of dedication to the City of Waverly earned him the Lifetime Service Award, which was presented to him in 2013. Gary was also active with the Exchange Club where he had served as President. He was a devoted member of Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls.

Gary followed many different sports throughout the years. He was an avid Wartburg Wrestling fan, enjoyed riding motorcycles, and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed PBR Bull Riding and chuck wagon races.

Gary is survived by his wife, Dita, of Waverly; two sons, Jeff Haskin, of Grundy Center, and Tracy (Leslie) Haskin, of Waverly; one daughter, Cindi (Rick) Zimmermann, of Madrid; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; one brother, Dennis "Dex" (Karen) Boorom, of Crocker, Mo. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at The Centre Hall in Waverly with the Rev. John Fuller of Prairie Lakes Church officiating. Burial will follow in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services on Thursday.
