Herbert (Herb) J. Clemen, 70, of Readlyn, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at his home of liver cancer.
The Guest Book is expired.
Herb was born on July 3, 1943, in Dyersville, son of Nicholas and Frances (Leigh) Clemen. He grew up in Farley and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in 1961. He then joined the U.S. Army and served from 1961 to 1964. After serving his country, he resided in Waterloo and began working at John Deere Tractor Works - Foundry Division. He was promoted to supervisor in 1974 and retired after 35 years of service in December of 1999. Herb also farmed until 1985 while being employed at John Deere. He married Brenda Krug in 1967, and they were later divorced. Two sons were born of this union: Brian and Derek.
In October of 1983, he married Jacquelyn L. (Brown) Rule. In 1995, Herb and Jackie moved from an acreage to a house in Readlyn. They were welcomed by the community and became involved in many activities. Herb was very patriotic and enjoyed being involved in politics. He was elected Mayor of Readlyn in 1994 and served for eight years. He was instrumental, along with many others, in extending the bike trail from Waverly to Denver to Readlyn. Also in 1994, Herb acquired a long-standing community "gathering place," known as The Center Inn, and refurbished/remodeled it because he felt this was the "heart" of Readlyn. He was instrumental in improving the recycling system in Bremer County and received an award from EEBRA for his efforts.
Herb had many interests and hobbies, but his favorite was traveling in the RV. He and Jackie saw many great sights from east to west and north to south. He especially enjoyed trips with family members and up to five grandchildren at a time. He was an excellent woodworker, having made much of the furniture in his home. Other enjoyments included card playing, golfing, Grump Days, church, movies and his grandchildren.
