Melvin Keith Brown, 83, of Waverly, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, at ManorCare Health Services in Waterloo, Iowa.

Melvin was born December 5, 1930, in Appleton, Minnesota, the son of Verland and Verbena (Adelmund) Brown. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in May of 1948. Immediately after graduation, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy. He served 4 years and also served in Korea for 13 months in 1950 and 1951. He was honorably discharged in June of 1952 and returned to his parents' home in Clarksville, Iowa. Melvin was united in marriage to Kay F. Voss on August 12, 1956, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville. They made their home in Waverly, Iowa where Melvin was a supervisor at Shield Bantam, now known as Terex. He retired on January 1, 1993 after 36 years of service at Bantam. Kay passed away in 2009, and Melvin continued to live at home.

Melvin was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly and a life member of VFW Post 2208. He also was a member of the Waverly Special Police for many years. He enjoyed playing ball, bowling, golfing, hunting and fishing in Canada where he spent one week per year for 34 years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Melvin is survived by two sons; Lance (Tammy) Brown of Las Vegas, Nevada, Scott Brown of Waverly, three daughters; Kathy (Lou) Staudt of Shell Rock, Kelly (Kevin) Sutton of Waverly, Kristi (Ty) Schuler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, two brothers; Verland (Velda) Brown of Aurora, Illinois, Wayne (Alice) Brown of Waverly, two sisters; Dixie (Jim) Lynch of Waverly, Janice (Keith) Berger of Clarksville.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Kay, one sister; Kathleen Eliason, two brothers; Dr. Harold Brown and Laverne Brown, one grandson; Jonathan Goddard.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
