Wilma Maria Cooley, 83, of Waverly, passed away on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, from complications of Viral Meningoenchephalitis.

Wilma was born on Sept. 25, 1930, in Douglas Township, rural Bremer County, the daughter of Herman and Clara (Oberheu) Brase. Wilma was the fourth of eight children. She was baptized on Oct. 19, 1930, and confirmed on April 2, 1944, at St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas. Wilma attended Douglas No. 9 Country School through the eighth grade, and graduated in 1948 from the Waverly High School. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper for Schlutsmeyer's (now B.E. Mick's) for one year. On June 12, 1949, she was united in marriage to Leo Frank Cooley at St. John Lutheran Church – Western Douglas. The couple lived in rural Plainfield for one year before moving to Waverly. Wilma then went to work for the Waverly High School, first as Robert C. Gaard's secretary for five years, and then as secretary for J.K. Haehlen, Superintendant of Schools. On Dec. 8, 1958, Wilma began working at Schield Bantam Company (Koehring/Terex) retiring on Oct. 1, 1992, as an Order Entry Manager. Leo died on April 25, 1997, and Wilma continued to live in her home in Waverly.
Survivors are her two sons, Michael L. (Carla) Cooley, of Waverly, and Thomas L. (Susan) Cooley, of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; two daughters, JoLynn C. (Tim) Redies, of Palm Cost, Fla., and Ann L. (Cooley) Laube, of South Elgin, Ill.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Rosamond "Rosie" Hoffman, of Waverly; and brother, Jonathan (Candy) Brase, of Milwaukee, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; her grandson, Joseph Benjamin Mazziotta; three brothers, Paul, Jerry and Robert Brase; two sisters, Selma Carroll and Martha Griesert; three brothers-in-law, Robert Griesert, Keith Carroll and Robert Hoffman; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Brase; four nephews, and one niece.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will follow in Harlington cemetery in Waverly. Friends called on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also an hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
