Don C. Thompson, 89, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa, of natural causes.

Don was born on December 25, 1924, in New Hartford, Iowa, the son of Viggo and Edna (Bickner) Thompson. Don attended school in New Hartford, graduating in 1942, from the New Hartford High School. On November 6, 1942, Don entered the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII until his honorable discharge on April 8, 1946. Don returned to New Hartford following his discharge and worked as a cabinetmaker and carpenter. On June 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Doris J. Austin at the Methodist Church in Dubuque, Iowa. The couple lived in Waterloo, Iowa, and Illinois before moving to Shell Rock in 1962. Don worked building houses, he and Doris owned and operated the Garden Café in Shell Rock, and then Don worked for the Carnation Company in Waverly from 1967 until his retirement in 1986, as a manager of inventory control, in the north plant.
Don was a member of the American Legion Post #393 of Shell Rock, Iowa. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, gardening, travel, fishing, dogs, birds and woodworking. But most of all, Don was a great father, grandfather, and husband; he was the rock of the family.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 63 years, Doris of Shell Rock, Iowa; two daughters, Gail (Steve) Rathe of Readlyn, Iowa, Jean Lukehart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, William (Nicole) Lukehart, Lacey (Justin) Dean, Matthew (Heather Sells) Lukehart and Lindsay (Brian) Pottebaum; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Don's body has been cremated, and a memorial services will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 11:00 am, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Robert Holdorf officiating. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial of cremains will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock. Military rites will be conducted by the Avery-Slight American Legion Post #393, Shell Rock. Memorials may be directed to the
