Marie Anne Whitley, 79, of Waverly, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

Marie was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Allison, the daughter of Claude and Verena (Buroker) Crawford. She graduated from Allison High School. On Sept. 6, 1964, she was united in marriage to Scott Whitley in Allison. After completing nursing school, she was a nurse at both Allen Hospital in Waterloo and Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.
Marie was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. She devoted time as a member of the Revolutionary Dames Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Marie enjoyed studying family history and genealogy. A selfless and giving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her greatest joys in life were centered on caring for her family and watching them grow. Whether it was a holiday gathering or a sporting event, she always found a way to spend quality time with her family. She was an avid reader and a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially their wrestling program. Marie was also known for her cooking, in particular, her sweets and goulash.
Marie is survived by her husband, Scott Whitley of Waverly; one son, Jeff Whitley, of Lakewood, Colo.; three daughters, Jill (Wade) Miller, of Tripoli, Cindy (Kurt) Kugel, of Waverly, and Heather (Brian) McClatchey, of Iowa City; nine grandchildren, Faye Menzel, Tara Whitley, Wesley (Nicole) Miller, Shelby Miller, Lucas (Allison) Burrier, Whitley (Teri) Burrier, Abby (Tyler Pauley) McClatchey, Emma McClatchey, and Sophie McClatchey; nine great grandchildren, Nicole, Keegan and Lennon Miller, Ethan, Conner and Mia Adkins, and Margaret, Penelope and Broderick Burrier. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother Ernest Crawford, and a sister Ruth Crawford.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with the Rev. Deb Wise officiating. Burial will follow in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 14, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.
