Lucille Pauline Smith, 99, of LaPorte City, and formerly of Waverly and Plainfield, died Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2014, at the LaPorte City Nursing & Rehab Center of natural causes.

Lucille was born on March 21, 1915, in Butler County, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Heine) Hirsch. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Clarksville and attended the Maple Grove Country School near Horton. Following her schooling she helped her parents at home as Lucille had 14 brothers and sisters. On Dec. 7, 1932, Lucille was united in marriage to Bernard Smith Sr., in the Peace United Church of Christ Church in Clarksville. They were married for 67 years. In 1941, the couple made their home in Cedar Falls until 1945, when they moved to Bernard's parents' farm in Horton, where they had a milk route. In May of 1999, Lucille made her home at the Eichhorn Haus in Waverly until 2010 when she became a resident of the LaPorte City Nursing & Rehab.

She was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Clarksville, and loved to collect salt and pepper shakers. Lucille also enjoyed gardening, baking and spending time with her family.

Lucille is survived by her son, Bernard L. Smith Jr., and his wife Evelyn, of Waverly; her daughter, Nancy Liebsch, of Washburn; her daughter-in-law, Joyce Smith, of Pine River, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna; her husband Bernard Sr.; her son, Floyd; grandson, David; and nine brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua. Public visitation were held on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 3 until 4:30 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.
