J. Thomas Cushman, 83, of Chestertown, MD, died Thursday, August 14, at Chester River Hospital after a brief illness. Husband of the late Carol Morey Cushman and father of Diane C. Mayes (Boynton Beach, FL), Carrie C. Sullivan (Wayne, PA), Tom Cushman, Jr. (Wayne, PA), Daniel G. Cushman (Chestertown, MD), and Megan C. Evernden (Seattle, WA); six grandchildren, Alie S. Reid and Jessica Sullivan, Ryan Molloy and Caitlin M. Navarro, Austin Evernden and Hudson Evernden.
Born on June 25, 1931 in Riverhead, New York he was the son of the late George and Eleanor Cushman (nee Geschwelm). While a retiree residing in Chestertown for the past 11 years, he was a resident of Wayne, PA for 38 years. Mr. Cushman was a graduate of LaSalle Military Academy (1949) and Villanova University (1953). Following his service in the Korean War as a Corporal with the United States Marine Corps, he enjoyed a lengthy career with Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company and its affiliate, Capital Analysts, Inc. In between, he worked at K. S. Sweet Associates.
An avid yachtsman, in both sailing and motor boating on the Chesapeake Bay, he was licensed by the US Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine in 1991 and captained his vessel, Dichotomy, first as his sloop and in later years as his trawler.
His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, at 11 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD 21620. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Chester River Hospital Foundation.
