Stanley (Slim) Kowalczyk of Cherry Ridge, Honesdale passed away at home on February 13, 2013 after an illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Janice Hooley. They were happily married on November 13, 1976.
Born in Scranton on September 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Stanley and Stella Sczymanski Kowalczyk. The family moved to Cherry Ridge when he was 4 years old. Slim grew up on a farm and was a hard worker all his life.
He loved to keep himself busy whether it was going to auctions, working on trucks, tinkering in the garage or helping family and friends. He was an avid fan of Day's Bakery visiting most everyday for his coffee and apple fritter. In the last year he and Janice would get his donuts and sit along Main St. and enjoy the people. He was in his glory running any type of construction equipment.
His greatest joy was having his children and grandchildren around him. He held many jobs in his life from working at the old Husko Shoe Factory, bringing in hay from the Finger Lakes for the Bunting farm, driving car carriers from the Great Lakes, snow plowing roads and driveways for many years, building Rt 191 from Lake Ariel into Honesdale, his own truck dealership on Rt 6 and running machinery for Joseph Krempasky Equipment, an old friend. As you can see he was a jack of all trades, never slowing down.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Honesdale and Local Union No 449. Thanks to the expertise of Dr. George Tietjen, he was a 20 year colon cancer survivor.
He is survived by daughter Jody Simon and husband Bill, children Raegan and twins Zackary and Stella of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, stepsons Matthew Bowman and wife Monique and stepdaughter Taylor Hall of Honesdale, Todd Bowman and wife Julie and children Kailyn and Grace of St Charles, MO and Doug Bowman and children Samantha and Dylan of Lehighton, PA. He is also survived by brothers Louis and wife Marion, Frank, Michael and sisters Mary McDonald and husband Paul all of Honesdale and Angie Fox and husband Joseph of Waymart and many nieces and nephews; and will be sadly missed by Phoebe, his bichon and cat Dudley.
He was preceded in death by brothers Daniel, Alfred, John, Joseph and sister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16th at the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale at noon.
Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale of Saturday from 10 to 11:30.
