Charles (Chuck) Leo Fitzsimmons, 47 of Scranton, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, January 3, 2013.|
Born on September 21, 1965 in Honesdale, he was the son of Francis G. and Anita M. Lyon Fitzsimmons of Beach Lake. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. After graduating high school, he immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he actively served for eight years.
As a sergeant, Charles served in Operation Desert Storm/Shield and received many decorations and awards including The Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Commendation, Good Conduct Medal with one bronze star, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Medal with three bronze stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Rifle Expert Badge(3), Pistol Badge and a Meritorious Mast (5).
Following his honorable discharge, Chuck worked briefly as a security guard and then was employed for 13 years as a Corrections Officer at Graterford Prison. Upon leaving Graterford, he enjoyed working in the outdoors, landscaping.
Chuck always had a generous heart and had a real soft spot for all types of animals. He also enjoyed collecting gems, watches, and crosses. He spent many hours perfecting his woodcarving.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother Robert Fitzsimmons and wife Collette of Cheltenham, PA; his sister Kim Bates and husband Richard of Beach Lake; several nieces and nephews.
