Joseph B. Fives, 71 of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne Crowe Fives on January 6, 1996.|
Born March 25, 1942 in Mount Pleasant Twp. at the family home where he still resided, he was the son of the late Michael and Rose Gill Fives. He was a graduate of Pleasant Mount High School, where he excelled in baseball and basketball. He enjoyed sports when he was younger and holds the Mountain Baseball League batting average record. Later he would continue both playing and coaching baseball for Gallaudet University. In 1972 he graduated from Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. with a degree in biology. He was employed by PennDOT in Honesdale for 35 years before retiring.
Joe was a member of the Honesdale Golf Club, the Pleasant Mount Hunting Club, the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame and the former St. Cecelia's Church in Hilltop.
He enjoyed golfing and hunting, but especially enjoyed spoiling his grandson.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Fives and husband Matt Coburn of Hanover Twp.; brothers Tom and wife Bonnie and Billy and wife Faye all of Pleasant Mount; a sister Margaret Carden and husband Jerry of Bridgewater, NJ; a sister-in-law Ann B. Fives; his grandson Brendan (Bernie) Fives-Coburn; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother Robert E. Fives and his sister Regina M. Fives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 13th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10am. Interment will follow in St. Cecelia's Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., Honesdale on Sunday from 2 to 5. Condolences: www.hesslingfuneralhome.com
