He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Georgianna Sherman.
Born on July 31, 1935 in Rochester, NY, he was the son of the late Cleveland and Cora Poole Mercer. Don grew up on the family farm in Alexandria, Virginia where he learned to take care of horses. He made a career as a horseman in the racing industry.
Following his retirement, he moved to Honesdale where he worked at the Ridd Horse Farm and later the Doris Leventhal Horse Farm. He was a member of the New York Racing Association.
Don enjoyed boating, fishing and cooking for family functions.
Also surviving are his sons Donny and wife Pam of Kentucky and Roger and wife Susan of Long Island, NY; his daughter Lisa Mercer of Honesdale; grandchildren Barbara Bigio, Tyler and Erin Mercer; step-grandchildren Briana and Melanie; great grandchildren Joshua Benson and Adrianna Torres; nieces and nephews.
As per his request, cremation arrangements are being handled by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.
The family will receive friends on Friday at the funeral home from 5 to 7.
