Henry Beattie

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Henry "Hank" Beattie, 83, of Las Cruces, N.M., died Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.

He was born to Mendell Earl Beattie and Willie Veigh Morris Beattie on his great-grandfather's farm in Transfer, Pa. He spent the first 11 years of his life in Thomasville, N.C. His family eventually moved to Cedarville, Ohio, where Henry graduated from Cedarville High School in 1947. He graduated from Cedarville College in the summer of 1951 with a bachelor of science degree, specializing in secondary education in biology, history, social science and physical education.

Henry loved participating in sports and was a natural athlete. Basketball was the sport he loved most, and he played on both his high school and college basketball teams. He started his teaching career in 1951 at Jackson Center High School. His teaching career was interrupted by his service in the Army Medical Corps. After serving his country honorably, he was discharged Oct. 15, 1953. It was at this time that he met and married Janice Rose Jones of Corbin, Ky., the apple of her father's eye. Two years later, Henry moved to Mechanicsburg, Ohio, a small farming community, which he liked to refer to as his Mayberry. There he took up a new teaching and coaching position. In January 1964, Henry decided to move to a warmer climate. The superintendent for Las Cruces Public Schools (Mr. Tom J. Mayfield), hired him immediately to teach driver's education and coach varsity basketball. Henry, Janice, and his two girls headed out West. He coached Bulldawg basketball, cross-country, track and field and any other sport that needed a coach. He taught and coached at Las Cruces High School from 1964 to 1988. In 1988, he left Las Cruces High School to teach at Onate High School. He taught at Onate High School until his retirement in 1991. His retirement years were very enjoyable. He loved gardening and tending to his yard. He also enjoyed reading about history, especially books on the old West.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Rose Beattie Ulsh.

He is survived by his brother Calloway Lawson (Joyce) and family of San Antonio, Texas; daughters Brenda S. Beattie and Lisa A. Beattie, both of Las Cruces, N.M.; grandchildren, Alexa Rose Schwartz-Beattie (fiancé Cheyenne Kiel) of Stuttgart, Germany; Ryan James Schwartz-Beattie (Danielle) and family of Albuquerque, N.M., and Gavin Beattie of Las Cruces, N.M., and two great-grandchildren, Bianca I. Schwartz-Beattie and Lillian Veigh Schwartz-Beattie; nephew Michael Ulsh (Sarah) and family of Las Cruces, N.M.; and niece Cay Ulsh Preston (Pat) and family of San Angelo, Texas.

Henry will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He was a great father, grandfather, and a good man. A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 5, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. To sign our local online guest book, please visit
