Arthur Starman Obituary

GOLDEN Ill. -- Arthur "Art" Starman, 89, of Golden, died at 7:48 p.m. Wednesday (April 17, 2013) in the Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden.

Born Aug. 1, 1923, in Mendon, Art was a son of Edward and Elizabeth Holtschlag Starman Sr. He married Doris J. Barrigar on Oct. 11, 1947, in Quincy. She survives.

Art devoted his life to volunteering. He served as a youth group leader at Elm Grove Methodist Church where he and his "farm hand Doris" made their living for 38 years on their farm. He was a 4-H leader for the Shiloh Straight Shooters and helped to organize weekly men's club gatherings at Good Shepherd Home and assisted with their van trips. A highlight of the last several years has been to bake up to six batches of chocolate brownies each week and then cut them and put them in zip lock bags labeling them "Art's Brownies". He would then deliver them to his family and friends and on his many doctor visits. He enjoyed seeing smiling and happy faces especially when the children would see the white paper bags. He received a "Volunteer of the Year" award from the Good Shepherd Home in 2004. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Golden, the Augusta and Golden Lion's Club, was an avid Cardinal baseball fan and loved to travel with his family. He and Doris celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries with family reunions in Las Vegas.

At the age of 54, Art was paralyzed from the neck down with Gullian Barre Syndrome. He showed his true determination and grit by learning to crawl and walk again.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Doris; two daughters, Sandra Kessler (Frank) of Macomb and Carol Cory (Dr. Fred) of Kalispell, Mont.; three grandchildren, Liz Jensen (Mark) of Austin, Texas, Neil Kessler (Rita) of Birmingham, Ala., and Mathew Kessler of San Francisco, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Jensen, Heather Jensen and Anajulia Kessler; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Starman was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth Starman and Edward Starman Jr.; and two sisters, Virginia Dreyer and Leona Starman.
