HERSMAN, Ill. -- Arthur L. Scranton, 90, died Saturday (July 13, 2013) at his home in Hersman.
He was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Hardin Township in Pike County, a son of Charles E. and Veda Frances Shaw Scranton. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Alice M. Hobbs Scranton on farms in Time, Fishhook, and later the Perry, area. He married Helen M. Smith on Sept. 25, 1943, in Pittsfield, in the Methodist church parsonage and she survives in Hersman.
Mr. Scranton was a 1940 graduate of Perry High School. After graduation he was a farmer and carpenter his entire working life, having a dairy farm north of Perry.
He was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau. Arthur served as a 4-H leader for several years and also on the board of directors of Southern Illinois Breeders Association. He initiated the start of the Perry Little League and served as coach.
Also surviving are sons, Charles (Debbie) Scranton of Kinderhook, James Scranton of West Fargo, N.D., Bill (Margaret) Scranton of Hersman, Burton (Barbara) Scranton of Spring Branch, Texas, John (Patti) Scranton of Mount Sterling, Carl (Debbie) Scranton of Springfield, Mo., and Joyce Hoover of Normal; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother; great-grandsons, Ryan Macomber and Adrain Scranton; a brother, Francis Scranton of Geneseo, and a halfsister, Alberta Grace Scranton, in infancy.
SERVICES: 11 a.m. Thursday in the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield with burial in Smith Cemetery near Milton.
VISITATION: 9 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Perry United Methodist Church or Smith Cemetery.
