BARRY, Ill. -- Berniece C. Doyle, 89, of Barry, died at 8:35 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 5, 2013) in Barry Community Care Center, Barry.
Berniece was born on Aug. 31, 1924, in Bluff Hall, a daughter of Andrew and Anna Echternkamp Schafer. They preceded her in death.
She first married Vernon D. Ogle on June 4, 1946, in Bluff Hall. He died May 2, 1982.
She later married Ivy O. Doyle on Oct. 11, 1985, in Barry. He died Nov. 2, 2003.
Berniece operated Ogles Store with her late husband, Vernon. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Barry where she served as treasurer for several years. She was a past member of the C.W.F. choir and had taught Sunday school for several years. She was a member of the Seekers Bible study group.
After retiring from the grocery store in 1988, she worked part time at the Kirgan Funeral Home. She was the recipient of the â€˜Friend of the Community' award in 2001 from the Barry Apple Festival Committee.
Berniece crocheted many lap robes and afghans for â€˜Colors for Christ' group. Many people were the recipients of her cookies and pies.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy Moss (husband Leroy) of Springfield, and Phyllis Wiese of Barry; two granddaughters, Chera Berck of Springfield and Lisa Moss of Springfield; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Flitz of Springfield; and two stepgreat-grandsons, Nikolas and Alexander Berck of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Andrew Schafer; two sisters, Thelma Baumgartner and Marjorie Arp ; and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Flitz
SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in the Kirgan Funeral Home, Barry. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry.
VISITATION: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
