PALMYRA, Mo. -- Carl Franklin "Sonny" Ahland III, 64, of Palmyra, formerly of rural Monroe City, died Saturday (Nov. 2, 2013) as a result of an automobile accident south of Palmyra.
Carl was born April 29, 1949, in Hannibal to Carl Franklin and Susan Gard Ahland Jr. Carl was married to Mary Esta Burditt on July 14, 1972, in Palmyra. She died Dec. 25, 1988.
Sonny was a 1967 graduate of Palmyra High School and later served as a member of the U.S. Army
and was a veteran of the Vietnam War
. During wartime, he served with H-troop where he received the Purple Heart
and the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars
Mr. Ahland had retired from Crop Productions Services/UAP/Gard Crop Services. He had formerly worked as a farmhand for Maurice Happel from 1970-1991.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra and the Boots-Dickson American Legion Post No. 174.
Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and driving around town with his beagle at his side.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilee Toye Ahland of Palmyra; three sisters, Barbara (Ed) Bumgarner of Las Vegas, Dora (Joe) Rothweiler of Palmyra and Margaret (Mike) Goodson of Hull, Ill.; an aunt, Dora (Jesse) Dyer of Quincy, Ill.; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, four great-nieces, and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
SERVICES: 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. David Johnson will conduct. Burial with military honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.
Casket bearers will be Eric Burditt, Andy Rothweiler, Jerry Taylor, Derrick Burditt, Kellen Goodson, Dan Taylor and Dan Gard.
VISITATION: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.
MEMORIALS: Zion Lutheran Pre-School or United States Army H-Troop Fund.
