Carl W. Fleegel III

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Carl W. Fleegel III, 61, of Hannibal, died peacefully of mesothelioma at 12:45 p.m. Sunday (June 30, 2013) in his home.

Fleegel was born Oct. 22, 1951, in Syracuse, N.Y. to Carl William Fleegel Jr. and Pauline Voninski Fleegel.

He married Mia K. Adkins, daughter of R. Wayne Adkins and Gretta Shinn Adkins, on Aug. 22, 1972, in Akers Chapel, Pike County, Ill. She survives.

Carl received his bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Illinois. Professionally, Carl worked as a construction sales and project manager. Most recently, Carl worked for Heimer Construction.

Carl was a talented restorationist and was very interested in preserving historic structures and repurposing them for modern uses. Along with his wife, Mia, Carl recently beautifully restored one of Hannibal's historic row buildings and converted the upper levels into the family's home.

Carl was a member of the Friends of Historic Hannibal, The Central Park Neighborhood Association, and Renaissance Hannibal. Carl's interests were his work and his family. Carl loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending time together with them.

He was a United Methodist by faith.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include his mother, Pauline Fleegel of Kannapolis, N.C.; three children, Laurie Ann Cooper (David) of Skaneateles, N.Y., Kathryn K. Fleegel of Philadelphia, Pa., and John Russell Fleegel (Michelle) of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Robert Fleegel (Sandra) of Kannapolis, N.C.; two grandchildren, Savannah Grace and Charlotte Rose Cooper; and one niece, Andrea Fleegel.

He is preceded in death by his father.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hull (Ill.) United Methodist Church, 350 E. Highway 106 Hull, IL 62343. Burial will be in Akers Chapel Cemetery on Route 96 in Plainville, Ill. The Rev. Marty Smyser will conduct.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. until time of services in the church.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the International Mesothelioma Program (IMP) at Brigham and Women's Hospital or Community Loving Care Hospice in care of the James O'Donnell Funeral Home, Hannibal.
