Carolyn J. Meckes, of 916 N. 36th St., died at 7:45 a.m. Friday (Jan. 10, 2014) in Blessing Hospital.
She was born April 26, 1932, in Loraine, a daughter of Roscoe and Eva Littleton Riddle. She married Raymond Meckes on Nov. 27, 1954, in St. Rose of Lima Church.
She was a 1950 graduate of QHS. From there she went on to work for the Quincy Herald-Whig for 48 years. She was also a member of Saint Francis Catholic Church.
Carolyn loved to bowl and enjoyed playing cards with her friends at their monthly club gatherings. She was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels and the information desk at Blessing Hospital. The thing she loved the most were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was loved by all of her family.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond, of 59 years; her son, Steve Meckes and his wife, Cathy, of Quincy; her daughter, Susan Gooding and her husband, Chad, of Fargo, N.D.; a son, Tim Meckes, and his wife, Paula, of Danville, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, Emily (John) Hawkinson, MaryAlice Meckes, Will Meckes, Sara (Hugh) Freeze, Ashley (Dave) Houghton, Ryan Long, Amber Long, Samantha, Chase and Chloe Gooding and Alex, Maddie and Max Meckes; two great-grandchildren, Jayce Long and Jackson Houghton; two brothers, Donald Riddle and his wife, Marylou, and Wayne Riddle; sisters-in-law, Shirley Bornman, Maryann Gelfand and her husband, David, Patsy Meckes and Ann Meckes; and a special friend, the Rev. James Wheeler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Richard Meckes and Russell Bornman.
SERVICES: 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Church with the Rev. James Wheeler conducting. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: Samantha Otte Fund, St. Francis Church or Quincy Humane Society.
