Fred Sehr Sr.

PLEASANT HILL, Ill. -- Fred Sehr Sr., 92, of Pleasant Hill, died Thursday (March 28, 2013) in Graham Hospital, Canton, Ill.

He was born March 29, 1920, in St. Louis, a son of Herman and Clara Hillig Sehr. He met and married Helen Lewis in 1940 in Troy, Mo. She died July 19, 1991.

Fred attended Cleveland High in St. Louis and later graduated with a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1942. He worked at Monsanto Chemical Co. in St. Louis in the 1940s. Around 1950, he began farming in the Pleasant Hill area. While maintaining his farm, he continued working construction for Local 137 in Springfield. He was last employed by the University of Illinois-Champaign as a steamfitter/welder, retiring in 1975. He worked on various large projects during his steamfitter/welding career such as Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois-Champaign and the Bridgestone-Firestone Tire Plant in Normal, but his heart was always at the farm, and he continued farming until his death.

Fred was an avid gun collector and dealer and loved his pets, Julie Wolf and Blackie.

Survivors include two sons, Fred (Julie Snider) Sehr Jr. of Canton and Herman (Susan) Sehr of Jerseyville; his "other" son, Merlyn (Margo) Winchell of Pleasant Hill; nine grandchildren, Heath, Michelle, Robert, Cody, Bobbie, Virginia-Marie, Sharlynn, Steven and Riley; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Barnes and Joanie Bryan, both of St. Louis; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Fred was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Sweeney, and a daughter, Jeanette R. Henderson.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Lummis Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, with the Rev. David Ford conducting. Burial will follow in Perry Wells Cemetery, near Pleasant Hill.

VISITATION: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: Endangered Wolf Center or to Mesothelioma Research.
