PAYSON, Ill. -- Freda V. Ward, 96, of Payson, died at 2:25 a.m. Monday (May 12, 2014) in St. Vincent's Home.
Born April 28, 1918, in Payson, she was a daughter of Archie and Theodocia Morris Smith. She married Ernest "Jack" Ward on Jan. 10, 1936, in Pittsfield. He died March 29, 1989.
Mrs. Ward was employed at Motorola until its closing in 1976 and then worked at the Illinois Veterans Home for five years until her retirement.
Freda attended Payson United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, playing the guitar and visiting with her neighbors.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Gretchen Anderson-Lyles (John) of Santa Fe, N.M., and Benjamin Ward of Payson; three sisters, Martha Foltz of Fowler, Bettie Walker of LaGrange, Mo., and Mamie Meyers (Glen) of Palmyra, Mo.; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Ward of Quincy. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Ernest "Bob" Ward and Edward P. "Perry" Ward; one daughter, Judith Anderson; three brothers, Joseph, Herschal and Virgil Smith; and three sisters, Norma Miranda, Juanita Vance and Rosemary Dickens.
SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Payson with the Rev. Katherine Herring conducting. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
VISITATION: 9 a.m. Friday until the time of services in the funeral home.
