Gene Smith, 86, of Quincy, died at 2:24 p.m. Monday (Nov. 25, 2013) in Blessing Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1927, in St. Paul, Minn., he was a son of Anthony and Marie Sorenson Smith. He married Johnina Wilson on Sept. 26, 1953 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on Oct. 15, 2001.
Gene graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa, where he played on the 1944-45 state tournament basketball team. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from South Dakota University in 1950 and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Mr. Smith started his career as a sales representative for Proctor and Gamble. He then became the sales manager of the men's department at Carson Pirie Scott until its closing in 1980. He then worked in advertising sales for 30 years until his retirement in 2007.
Gene was a member of Luther Memorial Church. He was also a former member of the Elks Club
, enjoyed dancing and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.
Survivors include two daughters, Toni Black (Michael) of Quincy and Jeri Kenning (Robert) of Evansville, Ind.; two grandchildren, David Ludwig (Dana) of Quincy and Kelli Day (Joseph) of Newburgh, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Landon and Lucas Ludwig and Connor and Keegan Day; one brother, Gerald Smith (Phyllis) of Ames, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Wagner of Loveland, Colo.; two nephews, Brian Smith (Fazia) of Miami Beach, Fla., and Dr. Gregory Wagner (Deborah) of Foster City, Calif.; and two nieces, Cheri Orwig (Mel) of Loveland, Colo., and Lynda Schrand (Dennis) of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnina; his parents; and a brother-in-law, Warren Wagner.
SERVICES: Noon Saturday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Metz conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
VISITATION: 11:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of services in the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: Luther Memorial Church or to the Quincy Humane Society.
